Has anyone tried the "Your Baby Can Read (http://www.tryyourbabycanread.com/default.aspx)" Program? I am watching the info-mercial right now and am seriously considering purchasing this for my 18 month old Granddaughter and my almost 3 year old Grandson....It is abit pricey but I think it is worth it because of the head start it will give them....

I saw this program talked about on the doctors. To be honest it looks like a TON of work. And the person who created it admits that by the time the kid reaches seven they read at the same level as the person who started learning at the normal age. If it was me I would save my money.

There are lots and LOTS of other books and programs out there to teach your child to read. My 3 1/2 year old can now read words with regular sounds and short vowels (we're working on vowel blends now). She'll be reading books before kindergarten, and we haven't done a lot of work at all(about 10 minutes a day for the last month) I suggest, if you are looking at teaching a very young child to read, buy or check out from a library one of the reading books by Sidney Ledson. He taught his 2 and 3 year old daughters to read in about 45 days, and his method is easy, fun and doesn't require any special equipment! All you need is his book! His method is really flexible too.
If you just want to teach your child phonics, my favourite books are Phonics Pathways and The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading.
But the BOB Books where what really got my daughter 'reading', and loving the fact that she could read.

You have to decide - why do you want the children to read this early? And how much time of their lives and yours do you want to devote to this practice right now? Are you interested in spending several hours a day on just drilling reading, or are the other things in that child's life more important?

Sheila, can you put the closed captioning on on your TV? Seriously, it works just as well and it's no additional cost. I didn't teach Devin (he's 6) to read. I didn't actively teach him the alphabet or his numbers either. He picked it all up from the closed captioning on the TV. He was reading before his third birthday.

Disclaimer: This doesn't work with all kids. Devin was eventually "diagnosed" with hyperlexia. He reads very well, by sight at a 5th grade level, by comprehension at an early first grade level. (He's in kindergarten.)

That said, the reading specialist at his school does recommend this to parents who say their kids watch a lot of TV.

I'm a teacher and was going to suggest what Leila did- Closed captioning. Lots of reserach about this- a big study between Finland and US and what gave them the edge was that there public programming has closed captioning by default, so they were reading soon and better at an earlier age.

My son started learning around 3.5 and we just used some phonics readers. I know Target has one of the Hooked on Phonics sister kits (I think it's called I can Read)... much less expensive and equally effective. now at 5.5 he's reading on a third grade level (they won't test for higher than 3 levels above). Yay!

Also, it sounds rather simple, but pointing to words in the book as you read connects words with meaning and they begin to make those connections and read familiar things. Also, environmental print- be a sportscaster calling things out that you observe (why do you think toddlers know the McDonalds golden arches? They connect the symbol or word with the meaning).

HTH! :)

Thank you all so very much for your replies....I will definitely save my money.... We don't have closed captioning on our tv, as it is abit older, but I will definitely look into the Phonics books at Target....I have seen them when I've packed the orders for the stores and had forgotten about them....I will also stop by our local library to see if I can find the books suggested....
