Okay I'm hooked (lightroom lol)

I downloaded the free trial this morning and I've been playing with it a few hours..question though...how do I save my changes after I've edited my photo..I cannot figure it out....export? does it save changes to my original photo or save a copy? I'm so confused lol

It automatically saves the changes to the RAW file wherever it is. But you can open it up tomorrow in the develop tab, and take it all the way back to import if you want.

Then you export as a jpg to use elsewhere.

Once I've made my edits I export as a jpg with a quality of 100 and using color profile sRGB and set to 300ppi. I have mine set to save them to a subfolder within my Photos folder, I make a new folder for each month's exports (ex. Feb09 Exports) since it's easiest for me to find them that way when I'm ready to scrap them. You can set up your export preferences the way you want them and then you can use Export with Previous and it will use those settings and then you don't have to go to the Export screen every time.

If you right-click on the photo you'll get an option to Edit the photo in Photoshop. It'll open a copy of the photo right in Photoshop. Then you can either just use it directly on your layout as is or do more editing with Photoshop and save it as an edited copy. Much easier than exporting.

It saves it to your RAW file but it adds a little rider file somewhere that tells LR what you did, so you can go back to the import of the original RAW if you want to. To use them, then just export as a jpeg (like said above) and then just open them in your program.

True if you are just doing one or two, but if you are processing a whole batch, then export is the way to go. But for onsey twoseys, yeah open in Photoshop. But wait...she's not using photoshop, so does it allow you to open in another program (PSP etc?)

You can also select multiple photos at once, right-click and select Edit and it will open all those photos in Photoshop for you. Not to say there's not a use for export but I find that I use this method much more often since I'm usually editing photos directly for layouts.

Under Preferences>External Editing, there's a place to select an Additional External Editor. Just choose whatever program you want to use and it should give you the option for Editing in (whatever program) in the right-click menu.

You can tell it to export to PSP or other file. It still puts a copy in whatever export folder you choose, but it opens that copy in whatever program you tell it.

With Lightroom2, after you choose Export, scroll down on the dialogue window to Post Processing. One of the options is 'open in other application' then you can choose what application

On my desktop (which is less than a yr old and has 3gigs of RAM) exporting is actually WAY faster than opening it in Photoshop and saving it from there. It literally takes three seconds to save the file when I export, so I think it really depends on your computer. I also like exporting cause most times when I'm editing batches of photos I'm not scrapping them right then anyway. So it really depends on your workflow.
