View Full Version : question about scraplifting

I was thinking about something the other day...I was wondering when someone scraplifts a person how they should handle it. I know all about crediting the other person and possibly linking to the other persons layout if that is allowed. That is something I think most everyone does when scraplifting. What I was wondering though is should you tell the person (provided it isnt for a challenge) that you would like to scraplift their layout? Send them a little note after you have done the scraplift to tell them you scraplifted them/let them check out what you did? How would you prefer it if you were the one being scraplifted? Do you like them to send you a message or do you not really care one way or the other?
For me I think I can count maybe half a dozen times someone has scraplifted me so I am honestly flattered everytime I get that message saying that someone had liked one of my layouts enough to do a scraplift.

I usually do try to send a pm if it's a scraplift not for a challenge. That is if I don't forget lol. But I do always credit and put a link to their layout.
You know..within the past week, I've come across 2 layouts (in another gallery) that were OBVIOUS scraplifts of 2 of my own pages..I mean one of them even down to the same kit I used...and not one mention of my pages in the credits...and these were not new scrappers so it wasn't just them not knowing. Kind of aggravating..that's why I ALWAYS credit and try to PM when I scraplift. I know I"m always flattered when someone lets me know...when they don't and then don't credit on top of that I feel kind of like they "stole my idea" kwim?

ITA with Nikki. I always PM the person to let them know I've lifted them because I know that I like to look at other people's work when they've lifted a layout of mine. I think it is totally disrespectful when people don't credit who've they've lifted. Being the smart ass that I am....I've actually left a comment about what a great layout it is and how it looks just like so and so's layout. *giggle*

This was a Really Classy way to handle it - make a comment on the original layout being lifted - something like that it was enjoyed so much it was lifted - and this was In Addition to crediting the original layout! :)

I would PM, but I don't scraplift, only for challenges.
I have seen a couple of instances of my work being blatently copied, and it sucked I wasn't credited. I would have liked to been PMd, I'd have been flattered! If I'm not credited or PMd, I feel like Nikki, kinda like they stole my idea.

I always PM the person. :)
I will say that I spen a ton of time in galleries and sometimes I will do a page and afterwards just be like "This looks so familiar!!" but not realize who or why..kwim? So it's hard when you really do spend hours browsing galleries....so if someone sees a page of mine and thinks it looks familiar, just shoot me a pm and let me know...cause if it is honestly not an intentional lift.

I've never PM'd the person I'm scraplifting, but do always credit...

i don't lift either, like jamie said...but i think it's a really nice gesture to pm the person and show them your work, thank them for the inspiration, etc.
and grrrrr to seeing my stuff lifted and not credited AT ALL...makes my blood boil.

You know Nikki....I've lifted (copied) you in the past...using the exact kit and everything. This was maybe a year or so ago, but I never posted those layouts. I wouldn't have felt right about it...even if I credited you. I would've had to say they were exact copies of Nikki's!!! I did them because I loved them, and wanted to be able to do a page that could look as good as yours!! I printed them though, and they are in my album.
That being said, I've come across layouts that were also lifts using the exact kits and everything of mine....no credits whatsoever either. I think it bums me out just a little!!

I'm with Debra. There have been a few times where I've completly copied someone else's layout, but I do not load those to the gallery. Those were because I loved the layout so much, wanted a copy for my own album.
However, when I do lift someone (not for a challenge) I always give credit. I'm not so good about linking - I guess I'm just lazy  I try to send a PM...but sometimes I do forget that as well. The times I have sent a PM, I've always gotten a nice response back from the original artist.
I usually only scraplift for a challenge... but I always credit and I honestly never thought of sending them a message showing them.

I don't normally scraplift except for a challenge. When I have though, I've credited the original in my credits.
Now, I have seen things used certain ways that I thought were cool and I haven't credited the person for the idea and now I'm feeling weird about it. LOL

Oh don't feel weird about that Paula! It is one thing to be inspired by someone's page and copying it. I think we have all been inspired at one time or another by someone's work.
I also, do not scraplift. But I think leaving it in the comments or sending a pm is always a nice gesture along with crediting it.

I try to leave them a comment at the original layout with the link to my lift.
On the failure to credit the original, that's discouraging, but honestly, sometimes you get so wrapped up in finishing your layout, posting, getting all the credits right, that you just forget. That has happened to me on occasion and I've had to go back and add the info about the scraplift when I realized I'd forgotten. Also, people who aren't on CTs aren't as savvy about the credit etiquette. So, I wouldn't let it bug you too much.

I usually credit and link even if I'm just inspired by something in the layout. I do try to PM the person, especially if it is a friend. :)
However, if someone scraplifted me and I come across it and I don't get credited, I'd PM the person and ask if it WAS a scraplift. For all I know it wasn't, lol. I do get the feeling some times there are only so many ways you can position photos and such on a page--so I wouldn't want to assume :(

You are so right on this. It would be easy to have pages that look similar without it being a lift. Definitely something to think about.

I typically only scraplift for challenges and always credit the LO. I have realized lately (especially after being the spin-a-lift last week) that MANY people are not crediting when they do a scraplift for a challenge.

I have noticed this too....

When I scraplift someone I usually copy almmost every detail and credit that person... Even add a thumbnail and link to the original layout.
But something funny/weird happened to me last week. I make a layout using a particular kit... one of those themed kits that when you see a layout you say... "this is XYZ kit made by ABC designer". And 3 different scrappers PM me ofended because they say I copy their ideas.
1st. I wasn't copying, the layout just flow that way because of the characteristics of the kit.
2nd If that was an "original" idea why 3 different ppl claim it as their own
My point is (and sorry because my lack of vocabulary fail me) where is the line between inspiraion and a copy? In the colors? In one object? in the kit?
Who was the first person to make a perspective room? Or an extraction? Or a paint splat?
Does anybody remember the huge drama about the shadow boxes almost a year ago?
Sometime we just see a layout and say... hey, that is a good idea and eventually (sometimes months later) we do something toying that idea, but most of the time we don't even remember where we got it.
I do know that I don't have any specific layout in mind when I did mine... so... where is the line?

I generally don't scraplift, but if someone wants to scraplift me I am fine with them not crediting me, honestly this kind of thing doesn't bother me all that much. lol

If I do a partial lift and post it in a gallery, I credit it but don't usually email the person.
I have done a few complete lifts for my own albums because I loved a page so much - for those, I don't post them in a gallery since I feel they're not really my work.

Mostly I only scraplift for challenges but I have done it from time to time without a challenge.
If I know where the layout came from & more importantly, can find it again to link it, then I will credit it. Otherwise I just say it is a scraplift & upload the thumbnail. (I keep thumbnails of layout favorites on my HD so I don't have to get online to be inspired, a habit from my dial up and erratic connection days)
Usually though I am inspired by things & at some later point I use the idea with no recollection of where it originally came from. It could turn out to be a lift but since I don't have the image I don't know that.

If I lift, or am inspired by a page and can remember it, then I credit and link in my credits. But I rarely send a message saying I lifted/was inspired by.

I don't usually lift unless for challenges, but I always list "inspired by" in my credits. The very few times I've been lifted myself I've really appreciated a little note telling me so. Gave me a warm fuzzy and then I could go leave some love too. :)

When I lift, I usually leave a note under the comments of their page and I ALWAYS credit and link under my page.
