I saw in our paper the other day that they had free admission to the zoo. It is about 30 minutes from my house but I figured heck how many people could possibly know about it? LOL All I can say is I have never seen that many people at the zoo in my life. Sooo many people. There was not even room to walk!! We only stayed for a little while then headed over to the beach. It was nice and quiet there.

People seriously do flock to free! Our local zoo is free every day, so it's not as busy, but when they have some sort of event--we just avoid that part of town altogether!

It's $10.50 per adult every day at our zoo...and it's soooooo not worth it...this big promo they made umpteen years ago about the natural habitat they were going to do just means you are that much further away from the animals and you can't see them. blech. We drive 3 hours to go to the Omaha Zoo...it's much much better.
In 2 weeks hopefully we will be going to the Oklahoma City Zoo with Stacy (Pewtertm) and her daughter for the 75 cent day!

Have you ever considered becoming a member of your local zoo, or the Omaha Zoo, if that is the one you prefer? Once you become a member you can usually go to your member zoo for free for a year (many times it is only a few times for this to pay for itself). But then many of the US zoos also belong to a reciprocal agreement which means that your membership at your "home zoo" will get you a discount at other zoos or sometimes even free admission. I always make sure that when we travel that I bring our zoo membership card.
Let me tell you, it's also nice to be able to attend our own zoo for no additional charge whenever we want. We can go for as long or as short as we want. There is no pressure to see everything every time. And if the weather gets bad and we want to leave it's really easy because we didn't pay admission to get in and we can come back anytime we want.
As you can tell, I'm a big fan of the zoo membership.

We also get the zoo memberships. It is so worth it! I have gone to lots of other zoos in the area for free because of my membership.

Sharon Kay, I forgot that you are a midwesterner too! The Henry Doorly (in Omaha) Zoo is SOOOO awesome! Isaac loves going there. We belong to our local zoo here in town and so we get into the Henry Doorly Zoo for half price. Totally worth it!! And there is so much there to see that it is almost hard to see it all in one day! :)
