ARGH!!!!:cursing::cursing::cursing: *insert many expletives here

Okay, I thought I was smart. I thought that I was safe, after all I just bought a 1T EHD, on top of my 500G EHD. I was going to have enough room for any backup.... Except that I haven't installed the 1T EHD, and tonight my laptop died. My laptop with most of my purchases from April on. My laptop with most of my layouts since April. Can I just cry right now??

At least the HP tech guy said that I can take out my hard drive and install it in my PC to do a backup, but I don't know how to do that, and won't that void my warranty? I checked the documentation, and it appears not, and the HP guy said I could. Question is though, who do I get to do it? Then I have to go through the entire reinstallation of everything. :crying:

Don't be an idiot like me...have a regular back up. A really really regular backup.

Was he talking about taking your laptop hard drive out and putting it into your PC? Because that would seem to say it's not the drive that's the problem so your files might be fine. It's actually not that hard to do assuming your drive is still working.

He claimed it is likely the motherboard, so the stuff on the hard drive is safe...but it has to be transferred. So I suppose I could probably call Geek Squad and get them to come do it then...right?

sure, typically you would take both the desktop and the laptop to them and they'd do it. From what I understand, it costs a WHOLE LOT more to have them come to you.

You can do it yourself pretty easily. I did it with my old laptop when I replaced the harddrive in it. If you're not comfortable opening up your PC, you can always buy a cheap external enclosure and just turn the laptop drive into a temporary EHD that you'd just plug into your PC like a normal EHD.

ETA: This is actually what I used: http://www.apricorn.com/product_detail.php?type=family&id=39 You just plug your drive into it and then connect it to the working computer and you can copy what you need. I think this one would probably work too, you'd just have to make sure it's the right size and type for the drive you have: http://www.apricorn.com/product_detail.php?type=family&id=57

Well I got the enclosure, hooked it up to the PC and it's not recognizing the hard drive. It may be a SATA/USB issue, but it could also mean that the hard drive is indeed dead. Let's hope it works on my PC at work on Monday, or I could be downloading 6 months of stuff again very soon.
