View Full Version : What's your best home remedy?
I caught this stupid virus from DH, who loves to share everything with me, of course. I've had no real fever to speak of, but the coughing is more like hacking and razors in my throat and I've tried cough syrup but just can't get a good night's sleep. I'm all congested, and nothing over the counter really seems to be helping.
Do you have any home remedies I could try to stop the coughing and get some sleep? I desperately need to get rid of this virus by Monday, since I'm teaching a 3 day course starting Monday morning... a little help, please?

Honey helps with coughing. It doesn't get rid of it, but it subdues it.
With my whooping cough, I've found that Halls work wonders. Stops it every time. And, much to my teeth's dismay, I even slept with one in my mouth on the bad nights.

Menthol, menthol and more menthol. I read somewhere to spread vicks on the bottoms of your feet when you try to sleep. I was very skeptical, but it does seem to help with my DD who gets really bad coughs.

A lady I use to work with swore by this method to get rid of a cough... take a damp wash cloth and freeze it... apply to frozen wash cloth to the throat. Continue to replace as the cloth "warms" up...
My grandfather would swear by taking a 1 tsp of cider vinager in an 8 oz class of water and drink... you can also gargle with it between swallows... that was a common thing growing up... any time I had a teany sign of a cold, I got that drink pushed on me...
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

Honey does more then just help soothe a cough. Honey has natural antibodies in it that help to fight an infection so I tell my kids when they get a sore throat (and I do it too) to take a teaspoon of honey every four hours or so. Also gargle with warm saltwater. It numbs the throat. To sleep I used to take nyquil but they changed the formula so it does not work as well IMO. You could try some nyquil though. It is the best cold med IMO. But my best advice to take honey...

This really isn't a home remedy... but I am a big believer in Zinc! It seems to zap any type of cold I have ever had. Dries my mouth out... but then that makes it easy to chug the water down
Hope you feel better soon!
