I bought my 15yo ds a regular Nintendo DS light for Christmas when Target had it on sale ... not sure if Target would let me exchange it at this point or not...but he has started saying he thinks he would REALLY rather have a DSi ...
...do you have a DSi...would you not trade it for the world...or is it all hype?
Thanks!

If you trade it, Sharon - Target won't let you, but you can go to any Gamestop and upgrade. Will still have to pay for the difference, but they do upgrades there.

We haven't opened it yet ... it's hidden away waiting for Christmas...I just looked and our receipt is dated 08/09/09...so 2 months ago today...didn't know if exchange policy for electronics was different than other items in the store. Plus we bought it with those Gift Certificates we got from prescriptions filled (from the paper)....

I don't think it's worth the hype...
I know gamestop will only give $30 to trade in the DS for the DSi..I think the diff is it has a camera? Three of mine have DSs and only 1 has asked for the DSi (the boy lol)

I just got a DS lite for my oldest. My friend Mel got a DSi for her oldest. There are three differences. DSi has a camera, plays music and it can sort of surf the web. I say sort of because the browser is lousy and Flash doesn't work on it. You can however download games from Nintendo for points like with Wii. The camera photos only look good on the DSi, the quality is just not there to print them, but you can do fun things with the DSi editing tools & send them to other DSi users. The music quality is ok. If you already have an mp3 player, you won't be impressed with the sound on the DSi.
I think it comes down to what you will use it for. I had assumed when he saw his friend's DSi he'd be all bummed he didn't get it. But. My son just wants to play games. He has an mp3 player & uses my old P&S camera. Once he discovered he could not play Crush the Castle or Mad Truckers on the browser (because they require flash) he was done envying it. The friend doesn't have an mp3 player & is really happy with that option on the DSi. The camera & the downloadable games seem to be decent enough add ons but he doesn't use them hardly at all.
Another friend's DD want the DSi because her friends have it and they chat & send photos to one another with it over the DSi net thing, games are secondary. If she wasn't 8 my friend says she'd just get her an iTouch. :)

Check your reciept, they used to put a returns accepted until date up near the top of the paper...I think it's under the address. If they don't take it back, you should keep an eye on game stop for the holidays in case they run another special on the DSi's. My son upgraded his old DS for the DSi in April when they came out and they offered 79.00 for the trade in and then he traded in old games ...it ended up costing him 9.00 for the new system and a brand new game.

i would try to return it to target...let them know it's a gift and you want to upgrade...they shouldn't have a problem...especially if you haven't opened it...

He had a DS lite but the hinge broke on it. Ok these things are good to know about it!! He does have my old camera he can use if he so desires...plus the cell phone he shares with his brother has a camera on it. They have unlimited texting on the phone so guess we don't need to worry about that then. ...and he has his big brother's hand-me-down ipod...so I think you just saved me $70!!! :hugs: I'll use the "reasoning" that the DSi cannot play his older games...while the DS lite CAN! woo hoo

I'm glad you posted about this. My oldest DD got a DS Lite for Christmas last year and is begging non-stop for the DSi. She's getting a cell phone with unlimited texting, picture mail & mp3 player in the phone for Christmas.. so we'll pass on the DSi. :D

I have the DSi myself...I got it because i figured i might as well get the newest thing when I was ready to make my purchase!
the camera is ok - but obviously I don't do anything with the pics except view them on the DS directly (a different pic pops up every time you turn it on).
I'm super ticked about the internet though...we just upgraded the wireless router at our house and the new "protocol" or whatever it's called isn't compatible with the wirelss in the DSi. So now the wireless doesn't work at home any more. Which sucks because many of the games have content updates you can get on the web!
bottom line - i agree with everyone else. play games on the DS Lite and use something else for MP3 and pictures!!

Well I know one thing in favor of the DS Lite is he has game boy color games he still likes to play and he can do that on it.
