My 4.5 year old is SERIOUSLY freaked out by these previews that they have been showing. We've read the book a few times, but she runs and hides when this comes on. My younger one calls them "puppies".
We are not going to see this movie and probably won't rent it when it comes out either. And that makes me sad, but there is no way we'd go. They are just too scary for my girls.

My daughter is having a "money and commerce unit" at school so they get to tour the movie theater and see that movie. I'll let you know if it's a scary as the previews.

Some of the reviews I've been reading say it is darker than your average kid film. They had it for release a year ago and had to send it back for Spike Jonez to rework because even the production studio thought it was too dark back then. We're going to wait a week or two and hear what parents say who went early on. I love the book so much, I don't want the film to mess it up lol.

Please tell us about it Traci. My son wants to see it, but scares easily, so I'm torn.

Ok I will! I don't know how much help I'll be though, my kids don't scare easily, so i might not be a good judge of "scariness"

I'm on the fence about this movie. The previews kinda creep me out. I'm going to wait to see what others say. I don't want the movie to ruin the book, kwim?

Misty,
This article from Newsweek (http://www.newsweek.com/id/217830)has spoilers describing the movie in about the 4th paragraph. Everything I am hearing is that it is a pretty scary movie for kids, especially young ones. You might want to wait until you hear from other moms who have actually seen it before taking your son.

I want to see it! and my almost 5 year old wants to, but we'll probably just wait until it's out on DVD and watch it before letting her see it, just in case.

The day before Halloween all of the Kindergarten and 1st graders are going to see this movie at the local theater ... I look forward to hearing your responses.

I think it would scare DS too..he's 4 but he's gotten picky about what he'll watch..things that used to not bother him, bother him now..like he's all of a sudden afraid of the sharks in Finding Nemo when we've probably watched it about 7million times in his life. So we may have to wait a while before he sees it..DH and I may have a date night and see it ourselves though lol

Mine aren't little anymore (well, in terms of movie scariness) but, if they were I could see them being scared by it. It creeped me out on the previews too.
DH and DD #3 are going to see a scary movie on Saturday while I am out with Darcy and the girls in Austin. Maybe I should suggest this one.......:p. I can just picture their faces now if I did......Doesn't compare much to Paranormal that they are considering now.
It looks very very different from the book. I don't consider Spike Jonze to be a real "kids movie" director so I'm reserving judgment lol. I'll either netflix it or wait until Darcy sees it with her boys lol

I watch a documentary about this and Spike Jonze said he wasnt' trying to make a kids movie..so it's not really aimed at little ones I don't think. I am anxious to hear what you guys think that go see it. I know the hubby wants to see it, but it looks a little creepy to me, lol!!

this was one of my favorite books when I was little so I hope the movie doesn't ruin it. Maybe some books should not have movies made after them kwim?
anyway I hope the movie is not too scary for the little ones.

I think it looks absolutely amazing, and my boys drop everything when the previews come on to watch them, so we might go see it (We don't go to many movies). Here's what I've read about it:

They reviewed this movie on the radio this morning and the commentator said that while it is a good movie, he did not recommend it for kids below 8. He commented on the fact that it is very dark and that while he was screening it, parents were walking out with their terrified children.
My son is 10 and he says the commercials are freaky! He has no desire to see it what-so-ever. I guess we will wait until the dvd comes out.

I also heard a review on the radio this morning and the guy said it was very disappointing for both adults and chidlren.

My boys show no interest in the movie, so I think we'll be giving this a miss.

Entertainment Weekly (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20312172,00.html) gave it an A but also said this:
Such a place — so playful and mysterious! So liberating and scary! (Yes, some littler kids might be frightened during this PGated film, but probably no more so than they already are in their dreams, the kind that come with no rating system to guide a parent; besides, to face one's demons is to tame them, right?)
I always found the book really creepy when I was little so I can't say I'll be going out of my way to see this but I'll be interested to hear what others think after they see it.
