I have really been craving a fresh coconut lately and bought one at the grocery store tonight. My mom always taught me to shake it and if it sounds like the fluid is relatively full and there are no cracks it should be good. So I popped two holes in it when I get home and drain the fluid. I smell it and smells ok...like coconut should but it was not clear. I go ahead and taste it and it tastes nasty. Well then I bust it open and the meat inside comes off the shell and it is all moldy!! SOOOOO GROSS!!! So aside from opening them up how can I tell if the coconut is any good? I am going to take this one back and tell them how disgusting it is and get a new one which hopefully will be good.

He said that typically if you can hear the liquid in the center it is good. So, maybe you just got that oddball bad one.....that would be my luck! :(

I kinda figured that would be my luck too!! I love coconut but picking a good one is kinda hit or miss. This is the worst Ive ever seen though. Usually itll just be dried out but this one when it split open the meat (white fruity part) was seperated from the brown shell completely and is covered by a grey icky mold. I took a tiny taste of the coconut juice before I split it open and I wasnt sure if it was good so I asked my husband to taste it and he did and took more then me. Made him sick LOL Not so nice I guess!! :p

When I was in Hawaii we bought a coconut with a straw in it - I didn't like the taste of the liquid at all. I thought it tasted rotten.
