Oh no...that is so tragic. I read that she's still planning to compete. She must be an incredibly strong person.

A similar thing happened in 1988 to US speed skater Dan Jansen whose sister died the morning of his Olympic race - he had only been informed the day or two before that she was even dying of leukemia. He still raced, but did not place (but he won a gold 8 years later). It takes a lot of guts and heart to compete after that, but it can also be a tribute to the lost loved one in the athlete's mind.

this year just seems to be fraught (did I spell that right?) with sad things :( My prayers going up for her family! I do admire that she's going to compete anyway. just so sad!

I am so sad too Kristin, I can't get her off my mind. She is still planning to skate her short on Tuesday. I don't know if I could do it. :(

So sad! :crying:
I love figure skating. I'm trying to watch it from Brazil, but I managed to see only Men's short program and Men free skating so far.

how tragic! My prayers go out for her and her family!
It's terribly sad. If you think about it though, her mom would probably want her to do it anyways. she's skating and going to give it her all because her mother would have probably rather her do it. I know if I was her mom I would! Lots of prayers to her fam :(

She had a massive heart attack when she arrived in Vancouver on Saturday and died in the hospital that same night. She was only 55, i believe. :(

My heart goes out to her. I wish her the very best in the competition. As the mother of middle-aged adult "children," I know that her mother would want her to go out and do her best.
