I was in the post office and there was this lady standing behind me. She was like two inches from my backside. I mean literally close enough she kept bumping into me. I turned around and gave her a look to sort of say you know you are just a little to close back up a little right? Didnt work. OK so I move up a little still trying to give the person in front of us space because I do not like people getting to close to me I try to give other people that same respect. Well everytime I move she would move. She was literally touching my backside with her body at one point. The whole time she kept coughing and sneezing and you could hear it was an icky phlemey cough and she would not cover her mouth at all. I was with my husband and asked him if he would change places with me. He did but she just continued doing the same thing to him. He kept moving away from her but she would just move everytime we did. Coughing and sneezing the whole time. What do you say to someone like this? I felt so icky with her coughing like that so close to me and her not covering her mouth at all.

I honestly was so uncomfortable I thought about leaving. I was talking to my husband and said something along the lines of people not knowing anything about personal space and that there is plenty of room in line that you do not have to stand so close to each other. She was standing close enough I know she had to have heard me say it.
Really irritates me though because the mail lady never bothers to try to deliver the letters. This is the third one she has done this with. One of them was a check and my husband chased her down to get it. She did not even ask for identification just handed the check over to him. Ive called and filed a complaint to her supervisor about it so Im sure that does not make her like me but I mean come on how hard is it to honk your horn and wait a minute to see if someone comes outside? Our old mailman when we first moved here would hand deliver anything that required a signature. I miss him LOL.

That really annoys me when it happens. I like my space, I feel all claustrophobic when my 2 boys get too close sometimes, so if it's a stranger it would freak me out. I would say something out loud about the person being to close, then leave for 5 mins and go back in after calming down, lol.

Traci, I love you.
What can I say? I'm confrontational about personal space. LOL In the US, it's 3 feet.
Ugh! I would go INSANE!! I am VERY protective of my personal space. I don't like to be touched. My friends have always teased me about it. If you're sitting next to mine in a theater or in the car or on the couch, you need to make sure that your arm is not even brushing mine. And, my kids make me want to climb the walls when they are constantly sticking stuff in my face and climbing all over me. I tolerate it better than I used to because I love the critters so much. But, it if it was a stranger in a public place, I just don't think I could stand it.

Traci normally I would not have an issue saying that (or something similar) but this was a little old lady. I mean like old enough to be my grandmother LOL

Yep! Awesome! :)
I'm just watching last night's American Idol. Kara DioGuardi has a personal space issue. I'm surprised Simon hasn't ripped her head off yet.

What do you mean? She was getting to close to Simon? I honestly did not notice that LOL. I could totally see him saying something though.

Oh yeah - she leans over toward him the whole time and turns her face to him while he's talking so that she's just inches away. He does kind of look and her and move back every now and then, but hasn't said anything (on camera) yet. You can tell it bugs him though. LOL!

I generally have a large purse with me and I have no problems casually swinging it around in a bit of a wide arc as I look around the place. Most people back off after getting whacked with it. It's heavy.

Uh oh.....I am a major touchy person. Like I don't invade your space up in 'yo face' kind of stuff....I just hug a lot and will touch your shoulder kind of thing. I am way too lovey. LOL
I do however suffer from being "touched out" pretty often. I read about that in a Mommy book when my kids were little so now refer to it that way. It's when you just can't stand kids (or your husband :p) on your lap or hanging on you or laying on you anymore! I would and will tell my kids that Mommy is having a "touched out" moment and then they know to give me some space. It makes me want to climb the walls too....:p
It's funny because I hug my friends and family all the time, and I'll touch your arm or shoulder while I'm talking to you also. So, we'd be okay NeeNee. I totally want an IRL hug from you someday. :) I just don't like the incidental touching - someone's leg touching mine if we're sitting next to each other in the car, etc.
Okay - I'm weird. I made peace with the fact years ago.

I'm very passive-aggressive. Personally, I would have either leaned back on her and pushed her backwards, or as La said, take a step back and step on her toes. Or perhaps turn around and sneeze all over her.
That's just me though. I can't STAND people who don't understand personal space.
ETA: I don't mind friends & family who like to hug or touch my shoulder or arm, like NeeNee would. It's when people I don't know are up in my face (or pushing from behind) that I can't stand.

I'll probably turn around w/ my hands on my hips shouting "EXCUSE ME?!?" mad:
If that doesn't work: spin around w/ my arms wide open drawing a imaginary circle and say: "This is my personal area. Don't stand in it!"
If this is not a clear sign that I am a really crazy bee-yotch in constant PMS mood, then I don't know! :p
It's ok to be touched for people who I know/who knows me. Definitely not by strangers doing nasty things in post office lines. Eek

At times like that it would be good to be a man...most of them don't seem to mind farting in public...and I'm betting letting a nasty one rip might have backed her off. LOL
Seriously though, I am so NOT a touchy-touchy person and that would have seriously ticked me off.

Yeah I'm with Traci, ask her to back up because you don't want to get sick. I don't care if you're old or young. My personal bubble is sacred! Do not enter or prepared to be whacked by my purse. This is why I hated the subway in Boston, crowds, ick!

I would have said what Traci said!!!! but not to defend her, was it possible she was from Europe? I know in alot of places in Europe, there really isn't "presoanl space" and that is just how they are!!!! that was the one thing I HATED living in Sicily...and they do NOT shower as often as we do either:p

Mom and I were at Red Lobster last weekend ... took an hour waiting to get a booth...I had my purse OPEN next to me on the booth seat ... and this lady walks up to my booth puts her purse RIGHT NEXT to my open purse and proceeds to DIG INTO HER PURSE while I am trying to eat my salad! Hello! It's MY TABLE AND MY SEAT!!! ...but I said EXCUSE me and looked her in the face ... she looked up and said excuse me and continued to look back and dig into her purse! I reached over and made a flourish of my hand as I ZIPPED MY PURSE UP right under her nose ... and said NO EXCUSE YOU ... and then scooted a bit over in my seat which caused my coat to move her purse. She moved. Some nerve! I was trying to eat at my own table!

lol...too funny, everyone. I have been know to say things in a really passive aggressive way, like loudly saying to the person I am with about that other person cutting in line and thinking they don't need to wait or things like that. I do like the fart idea though.
