I have a problem with Photoshop. All of the sudden it's running extremely SLOW. I'll drag an element across the page and then 2 seconds later it will finally go where I want it. I try to resize something and it takes forever.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'll take any suggestions you have! It's making me crazy!!

Thanks in advance.

Is your hard drive full?

Do you have an internet browser running? I know Explorer has a memory leak issue that will gobble up all the RAM, making PS run sooooooooooo slow. I usually shut down my browser and then reboot to dump all the memory. I now photoshop with no internetz (unless it's for something really speedy) and haven't had any issues.

might be another program you have running. Or maybe try restarting right before you open photoshop. I dont use photoshop but using Paint Shop Pro when I have alot of layers in my layout or a ton of files open in the program it starts to lag some.

Firefox can be a RAM hog too. The other thing I've found is if you leave Photoshop open for awhile, it gets slow. I always restart it before I start a new a new page if it's been open for awhile.

Is it always running slow or just sometimes?

It just started running slow about 2 days ago. I started getting rid of extra kits/photos and putting them on an external hard drive but that doesn't seem to be helping. I'll try keeping IE closed and then restarting. Yikes!

Thank you :)

do you have alot of fonts and actions on there. that could slow it down too!

I recently had some issues with my graphics card. Mine problem ended up being an easy fix -- the graphics card had slipped slightly from it's perch and the fan wasn't able to exhaust completely, so the card was over heating. This caused Photoshop to go SO crazy slow. So there's a chance that your graphics card might be going bad, or something else other than space/RAM usage.

Good luck -- I hope you can get it figured out! :)

Ok, so did you make any changes two days ago? Install any new fonts?

Have you tried resetting the Photoshop preferences? Sometimes that can help. If you hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift when you start Photoshop, it should give you a prompt to reset them.

Check to make sure that you don't have tons of brushes, styles, actions and patterns loaded in PS. If you do, save the ones you don't already have saved and then reset/delete them all from their respective palettes. The files to hold all those can easily become HUGE.

Great suggestions. I'll check out my actions, fonts, and brushes. It's been a while....

Thank you so much!!

I had this problem last week. A day afterwards, PS started crashing and it's virtually impossible to use. There's obviously something with the RAM, except -- there can't be. My laptop is a top class laptop and it's relatively new. What I think is that ACDSee is behind this problem. There were problems with it for a couple of months and I do think they led to this. A re-install of the system (without ever installing ACDSee) is what I have to do.

But it seems your problem might be different, even though the PS symptoms are the same.

I did Ctrl+Alt+Shift and it worked - I'm thinking it might even be faster than before!!!! Thank you so much!

Glad your issue is resolved, Kjersti! i wanted to add something in case someone else is having issues.

I experienced an ongoing and gradual slow-down of my PS CS2 performance, to where I'd sit there and wait several seconds for every file to open up just like you mentioned. (even after re-starting, nothing else open, etc).

I finally went in to do some good old system maintenance - the CHKDSK and other functions like that. I have no idea how - but I somehow had several GIGS of crap in temp files (my system is 2yrs old and I haven't done maintenance before!)

now that all of it is deleted, it runs SUPER FAST! woot!

I have similar issues with PS running slow, so I'm just wondering why resetting the preferences matters. I need to try this when I get home from work later today!

Rochelle - I went on blind faith with this one! I have no idea what it did....but it worked. Honestly, I don't even know if I did it right! LOL!! I still have all my actions and fonts so it didn't reset those things.

If you got the pop-up window asking if you wanted to create a new preference file, then it worked. It shouldn't do anything to your actions or your fonts.

I'm not sure why but the preference file in Photoshop can be corrupted over time and that's what will cause Photoshop to act wonky. Resetting it often fixes it. Sometimes it's caused if Photoshop doesn't close properly, other times it's just random. But for pretty much any Photoshop problem, Adobe lists it as one of the first things to try so I think it must just be some kind of quirk with the software.
