My DF has been working in the UK since the end of July and will be there until the end of the year. He's been home on weekends though so it's been really nice actually. Anyway, his birthday is this Saturday and lo and behold he can't come home due to the ash over the UK from the volcanic eruption in Iceland. It wouldn't be so bad except for, well, it is his birthday for starters, but also we were going to go see his parents. His mom is just starting to feel better after the chemo and radiation therapy and was really looking forward to seeing us. Not to mention he was busy all last weekend with his volunteer stuff at the castle ruin. So while he was home, he really wasn't, so it feels like he's already been gone for 2 weeks.
I just feel so bad for him having to spend his birthday away from home and alone in a hotel room. It sucks all the way around!!!

That sucks. My SO probably won't be coming home this weekend either, they have closed the airspace over Norway too :(

Oh that isn't good. This little volacano seems to have caused quite a lot of chaos today. On our news they are saying the airspace might be open tomorrow but I guess all the planes will be in the wrong place as they were all grounded together this morning.

Where abouts in the Uk is he?

I just saw on the news that all flights in Norway are cancelled tomorrow too. Probably Saturday as well. I think the worst thing is that emergency helicopters can't fly - there are lots of people in Norway that live far away from hospitals. They said they usually have 50 flights each day, 35 of those are life and death situations.

Thanks girls! DF says there is a very slim chance he might be able to flight out tomorrow, but I won't hold my breath.

Kristine-Yeah the flights are all getting cancelled tomorrow in the UK as well, or so it appears at the moment. That's why he can't come home. Sorry your SO won't be home this weekend either. That sad to hear about the emergency helicopters, I thought they were still flying.

Geordie Girl-Yeah, that little volcano has really caused havoc all over the place. DF is in Telford and flies out of Birmingham to Dusseldorf, Germany.

So sorry your DF might not be able to get home. :( I talked to my DH this morning and he said that apparently some of their flights bringing soldiers back from Afghanistan to the US have had to be delayed because they fly through Iceland. All the drama in Kyrgyzstan hasn't exactly helped either since that's the other country they go through.

I never would have thought about the emergency helicopters being grounded too. That's a scary situation. :(

I hope he will be able to make it...
but if not It will make his visit all the more special
when he does...maybe you can at least visit via webcam or skype on his
bday if he stays grounded.
