Prom is Saturday night for my daughter. She wants ringlet curls kinda like Taylor Swift usually has. She has super long hair (like four inches longer then the picture here)

which does not take curls very well but we are really trying and there is no way she wants to fork out 60 bucks to go to the salon to have the curls fall an hour later like they did for nearly every other dance she has been to. SO it has fallen on me to try to get this look for her:

Any advice on getting the curls to stay in place and look pretty like in that picture?

my hairdresser told me the trick to curls like that is hot rollers. You have to put them in perfectly because however the hair is curled onto the roller is how it will stay. I would definitely play multiple times before the prom night.

Yep, hotrollers! They are the best thing ever for soft waves. :) I would also use a good styling product to hold them, like bumble and bumble brand stuff like this--> http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT74&PRODUCT_ID=214 and either the prep or styling lotion (depending on whether her hair is colored). Her hair looks like mine... fine in texture but she has a lot of it, straight and doesn't hold a style. I heart bumble and bumble. :)
She is gorgeous, BTW! :)

we dont have hot rollers and I am not really experienced with them to be honest. Im afraid with her hair being so long we would not be able to get it done in time for pictures and getting her to her prom if we tried hot rollers. Ive been using these plastic rollers with clip type things that slip over the rollers. I think I am putting to much hair on some of them because some of them curl really well adn some just dont curl at all really. So I went and bought some more today. I redid it tonight and will see how it looks in the morning. I used like fifty tonight on her head.
Another thing is should I do her curls on clean hair the night before prom? Should she not wash it the night or two before? Should we use mousse or gel or hairspray to hold the curls? My hair is kinda wavy and I curl up just letting it dry naturally so getting curls to stay in my hair is not hard at all. Getting it straight like hers takes me an hour or more though. So I love her straight hair LOL

Thanks Heather :) Where would I get that styling stuff? Does Sally Beauty Supply carry it? Ive never seen it before and would need to buy it in person since there is only like three days to prom.

Just a quick fyi Taylor usually has extensions, those are not her perfect curls.

Squeaky clean hair won't curl well, especially if it doesn't hold curl well to begin with. So have her wash her hair tonight then just wet it tomorrow night and put the curlers in her hair. Since you are not using hot rollers, then I would definitely suggest you use some type of styling gel before putting the rollers in. Once you take the curlers out, but before combing them out, spray it with a little hairspray, let it dry then finger comb it out and go from there. Try to get a soft to the touch, super strong holding hairspray. One that has memory to it.

My hair doesn't hold a curl to save it's life. I wetted it down, then when it was damp, I twisted it VERY tightly onto itself, in little bitty sections, and pinned it with bobby pins. I repeated all over the head. I slept on it, and the next morning, un-pinned it.
I had tight curls all over. Fingerbrushing helped a lot.... it turned out really pretty, and lasted all day, and even overnight!

Caurso Steam Rollers are really good too!

I have this set, bought at Sally's that I use when I contract out formal hair-do's.
They might be a bit cashy for one night though!
Dirty hair is the way to go-especially is she has a bit of styling product already on her hair...will hold the curl way better...
I also use this product:

On every single strand before I roll-it was recommended to me by a stylist and it really works-adds shine and hold.
If you were closer to me I would come and do her hair-DANGIT!

We needed super curly hair for our synchro team, but it would work here too. We tied up the hair in rags. The bigger the pieces, the bigger the curls. We tied up their hair in super small pieces, because we wanted very tight curls, but you could tie them up in much larger pieces to get waves.
Just separate the pieces, and tie them one at a time. It works awesome! We washed their hair, added some styling spray first and let it dry until their hair was slightly damp. Then we started wrapping!
ETA: you can test this beforehand, to see what size strips you need for your rags, and how much hair to put in them.

Here's some pictures (don't mind the graininess, I had to zoom in a lot and am too lazy to do anything else with them LOL), this one is one of my girls getting her hair tied. She used REALLY small pieces of hair and got REALLY tiny curls:

Here is another, she used bigger pieces, and got a bit bigger curls:

This is a picture, the best I could find, of the backs of their heads. Some were curlier than others, depending on the size of the rags.

Yes, shower and wash her hair tonight, NO WASHING TOMORROW!!
Also, no hair brushes. Just run your fingers through it.
This reminds me that I need to figure out something to do for my hair on saturday for my girlfriends wedding.....

What Fire Wolf and GrahamCracker said. Not clean, just damp. Make twisties in small sections. If you twist long enough it will coil towards the head and pin it in place. I'd suggest either sleeping with it or doing it first thing in the morning. hair spray and dryer just before you want to take it out. And you want to take it out when hair is completely dry.

wow all really good advice!! (and I did not know those were extentions in Taylor Swifts hair!! LOL)
She has a really cute little metal headband (think tiara but not 3-dimensional...it lays flat on her head). She wants ringlets like a spiral type curl. The good news is experimenting with her hair I think I finally found the perfect way to roll it and got it exactly how she wanted it this morning. With a few curls as the exception that were not completely dry. On Saturday they will be in long enough to dry though as last night they were only in for like five hours before we had to take them out this morning. But she loved them :) I was so happy because I was getting a little nervous that she would not get to the point where it was what she really wanted (although I am gonna try a few of these methods when she bugs me to do her hair for her the next time!!)

haha! I was going to suggest the twisting method as well. My sister would have me do that to her hair once in awhile and it always stayed all day. I would just separate it into smallish sections (she has gorgeous thick hair, so they were about 1/2" when twisted), and then I could usually just pony a few sections together (she was traumatized by bobby pins as a child) and she would sleep on it and then have gorgeous curls the next day. Sometimes we had to use the hair dryer if we did it too late at night because her hair takes forever to dry.

I am a self-proclaimed hair guru! lol.
I'm always watching a ton of youtube videos to figure out new ways to do my hair.
Here are my suggestions:
-if you're going the roller route, such as hot rollers or a curling iron, dirty hair is a must.
-if you want to go a different route, like sponge rollers, paper bag rollers, sock rollers (same thing as paper bags), pin curls or these things I bought called curlformers (http://www.sallybeauty.com/Curlformers/HAIRFLAR01,default,pd.html)...you definitely want damp hair, washed or not, and hair products. Something for frizz, and something for curls or waves.
Here are a couple different youtube videos on the techniques I mentioned.
pin curls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epuFmdcE4FA&NR=1
paper bag curlers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoZ2QGq0n4A
Do a couple different techniques and see which one you like best.
Hope this helps

I think Taylor Swift has naturally curly hair too, so it would be easier to do to hers, rather than someones that's straight.
