View Full Version : Please Explain: I Can Has Cheezburger

Okay, so the site I Can Has Cheezburger has those cute cat pictures, right?
But
1. Is the weird spelling supposed to be how cats talk?
2. Why is a cat called a kitteh, and how do your pronounce that?
3. Does the whole language weirdness of these captions annoy anyone else?
Please explain. I am obviously missing something.

It's silly. Dogs (I Haz a Hotdog I believe) and cats can't spell correctly so it's spelled more or less phonetically.
Kitteh is my favorite, lol. It's like kittay but with an "eh" at the end. Kit-eh.
I love it. I haven't been in a while and I need a way to waste tomorrow so thank you for reminding me :)

Just imagine you are a cat ... be the cat
My kids love the site but I hate for them to look at it for fear that it will ruin their spelling

I have it in my reader. I think they are mostly hysterical. It's what the cat is thinking at the time. I don't get the bukkit & walrus thing that pops up from time to time but I love Basement cat & Ceiling cat. We call all of our cats 'kitteh'

Honestly, I think the crazy spelling is gamer/nerd-speak. Lots of guys on gaming communities type like that when posting.
teh is a common typo for the and can be pronounced kind of funny, so it stuck. same with ebil for evil, kitteh for kitten, etc.
A lot of the lolcatz images work for flaming "the enemy/opponent" in gaming too, so that's my take.
Could be way off, but lolcatz have been around forever in the gaming world, so I think some nerdy boy somewhere is sitting around making all these catz talk to make us laugh.

I have this friend at work that sends me the lol cats pics every day via instant messaging. I think the pics are funny, but the weird spelling annoys me. every. single. time. I'm too nice to tell her to stop sending them to me.

My teenagers love it .... mine is constantly showing me it ... I'd like to blame his bad spelling on the site, but alas ... it was public school and how they taught them originally to "sound it out" for 2 years and then try to reteach them the correct way....sigh...hard to UNteach what they taught them originally.
...hmmm a thought ... maybe they went to the same school .. and dropped out before the 'correct way' was taught lol

the way it was explained to me is that you have to remember that your cat has not been to school and they're doing the best they can at spelling and stuff, so you have to be patient with them.......and the bucket and walrus is totally fun, but you really have to start at the beginning and see all the posts about the poor walrus (LOLRUS)!!!! TOO FUNNY, need to go catch up on that site

So I just read "hackedirl" as "hackedgirl" and thought I'd check out the site. Don't go there! Especially if you're in a public place like an airport. Take it from me.

I never visit the site, but the few images I've seen shared don't bug me (som are even really funny)...even though I'm a word nerd / grammar freak. And like Robin mentioned, gamers use "Iz stoopid" spelling all the time, and it was actually annoying for the first 6 months or so. I finally just made myself immune to it. Thankfully Landon is still able to separate it out and aces all his spelling tests.

How small is the world?
I've been browsing through the site (I do appreciate it) and suddenly I see a photo of a hamster. I think to myself, this looks like... like a photo done by someone I know. Then I look at the credits and yup. I know the person who tool the photo, she's on Flickr and I know her thanks to a friend I've known for ages (thanks to Star Wars, that one).
I mean. You know what I mean. :-)
