Thank goodness I can't just sit and watch TV...

I have to be doing something (ie scrapbooking), or I'd never get back 10 hours of my life otherwise known as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

I never saw the movies in the theater. I had no desire due to both hype and lack of interest in the books (I attempted to read The Hobbit twice during my life--as both a kid and adult--and could never get through it).

But, we just recently got a new LCD TV (you know, the one with the extra yellow color :rolleyes: ) and a new Bluay, so the hubster picks up the Trilogy set.

The first movie was okay, and the third movie was better, but the second movie was a complete waste of time (other than moving the story along). I can't believe people actually paid money to see it in the theater. There was no real beginning or end to it...just a long, long, long "this is what's happening while we wait for the good stuff" insert.

So, I'm thankful that I could just get comfy on the sofa with the laptop and scrap. One of my pages even made GSO blog. Woot!! And Sasha (mom2peanuts) threw my other into the DST GSO. So, maybe long, boring, epic movies are good for mojo. :)

I loved the LOTR trilogy. I think Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom played a big part in me loving the movies, lol!! I've tried reading the books and made it almost all the way through the Fellowship of the Ring and I just couldn't make myself finish it.

Well, I remember lining up for hours before The Return of the Jedi (as a teen). I saw that and The Empire Strikes back before I saw the original Star Wars (same with Indiana Jones...saw Temple and Crusader before Raiders). Love the original Star Wars movies, but I never got into the prequels at all. Too much hype makes me rebel.

With Harry Potter...loved the books, and number 3 was my favorite. I watched movies 1-3, but I really hate how much is lost in the movies, so I stopped watching after 3.

I felt the same about the LOTR movies. They were well done but the second was just tedious to me, but so was the book. The problem with any middle of a series book/movie is that they cannot actually resolve a whole lot, just move the story along & set up a cliffhanger for later and sometimes that just is not very satisfying. I love the Star Wars movies but if it wasn't for a couple scene between Han & Leia, I could gladly skip Empire Strikes Back.

I watched them in the theater with hubby, and enjoyed them... but I don't think I can watch them again. Since becoming a mother, I have really grown more sensitive to things and they are a little too intense for me.

All the hype (and of course everyone saying how bad they are) is part of the reason I haven't see the Twilight movies.

I agree Harry Potter lost a TON in the movies, but I think those movies are REALLY well done.

As for Star Wars, I have no memory of ever watching them until meeting my husband and we had a star wars marathon and started with the prequels and it was hard to get into the older ones at first (quality) but once I did, I liked them much better!

Too much hype doesn't do much good, does it? It makes expectations so high that no movie or book can ever meet them. I'm right there with you!

I had the luck that I was born to a country where I discovered everything in the pre-hype period... :-)

With SW, I love both OT and PT, but I can see why people don't like the prequels. Still, Revenge of the Sith is pure genius. That said, Slovakia was never the primary centre of the SW hype, so I had not chance to be annoyed with it!

With HP, I think Rowling totally lost touch after book 4 and didn't handle her own fame. Loved the first 4 though. Again, I was happy to having started to read them when there were unknown in our part of the world. With the arrival of the hype I felt discouraged, and when the author herself turned to writing a would-be-serious fantasy saga instead of the fun and original kid books she started out with, that was it for me. Nevertheless I saw the Half-Blood Prince in the theatre and was pleasantly surprised that it was actually fun, while the book bored me to tears. With the other movies it was the other way round with me. A mystery never to be solved, I guess.

With LOTR - I used to be a fan of the books in my teens and early twenties, however, in Slovakia they were totally unknown. As for the movies, I don't think they captured the spirit of the books with the possible exception of the first one. But that's what book fans always say, eh? :-) Anyway, I think LOTR can only be appreciated by people who are into mythologies (it was Tolkien's aim to create "a mythology for England", and that concerned the writing style as well). Anybody who expects a normal book is bound to be disappointed.

I HATE LOTR but had to go see them all since I always seemed to be dating some geeky type who liked them when they came out. Our first Blue-Ray purchases were the 2 Narnia movies and 300.

actually my parents, grandparents, and all siblings are huge fans, so I'm used to it. It was just easier to get out of watching them then.

I've just realised that if life has a sense of humour, I will end up with kids who love romantic comedies. OMG! That would be the equivalent of your suffering though SW. :-)

you know, I generally tease you.. but i've never seen the harry potter movies either :p i have no interest.


The star wars prequels were lame- period. LOL there's no real debate there. They will never live up to the original star wars, and all the cgi just made me cranky. I think the actor choices for anikan & obi won were good though- that's the only thing i liked hah.

I DO love lotr- but they ARE long and the middle one is more meh... I'm quite impressed.. that's quite the bit of stamina there to watch them all in a row haha.
