So my son had his first trip to the ER last night. I told him to come to bed with me to try and get him to sleep a little early last night, when he was coming, he tripped over the blanket from my bed which had fallen on the floor in one area. He started crying and screaming and wouldn't calm down. So we started to the ER, a couple of block away he started playing I Spy with me and then fell asleep. I figured he maybe knocked the wind out of himself and couldn't get calmed down. So we went home and he went to bed. I went to work at 11:30pm and shortly after I got there, his dad called and said that when he went to the bathroom, he was refusing to stand on his leg. So I left work and took him to the ER. At first the doctor was pretty confident he had broken his leg, but it was in an area where a ligament crosses the bone in kids his age, so he couldn't tell for sure. He decided to put on a fiberglass splint and we waited for the lady to come with the happy gas. When the doctor got there, my son was refusing the gas and moving his leg around. The doctor said at that point, he wasn't so sure it was actually broken, maybe just fluid on the knee. So he left the splint up to us and we had it put on. We have an appointment with an orthopedic tomorrow to determine, but the doctor thought he would be walking by then. He's refusing to even try today though (he's a stubborn 3 year old). Please, pray that it isn't broken. He's a super active kid and it would kil him to just lay around inside and depend on other people to move him around. Thanks!

Aw, I hope he's OK. Do they not xray at your ER?

They did xay he said the part that he thought was broken is behind a ligament in children his age, so it can't be seen.

awww poor guy!!! hope he is ok!!

We had a similar experience where my son fell at school. He got home and told me about it and I called the school. They brushed over it like it was a non-incident and I thought oh he is ok because he was playing his gameboy and eating and everything but then he started whining about his wrists hurting. I looked at them and they looked ok and asked him to move his hands and wrist which he could do and I asked which one is hurting and he kept switching left then right then left and so on. Well I told him to just rest for a little while because my husband was still at work I really did not think there was anything wrong. By the time my husband got home and he looked at it (my son had fallen asleep between the time I looked at it and my husband got home) he could see some bruising and it appeared to be swollen. I believe we were thinking it was just his right arm though. Well we take him to the hospital ER to have it checked and he starts with the left then right then left again so because he could not decide they checked both arms and it turned out he had a buckle fracture in both wrists!! He had casts on his arms from his arm pits to his hands :( He was unable to do pretty much anything at all alone. So even when they seem ok I dont take any chances anymore LOL. I have enough guilt over that one for two lifetimes!!

Hope he's okay. Kids are tough so I'm sure he'll weather whatever comes his way.

My daughter had a weird break when she was in first grade. She tripped over a chair in school and twisted her ankle. Well to make a long story short, the ligament actually helped in breaking the bone when she twisted it because apparently the ligament was stronger than the bone in that part of her foot. She ended up being in a cast for awhile. Upside of it all she got to visit Disney using a wheelchair which basically means you get to go thru the handicapped line and get on the rides first; she thought that was cool but I wasn't too happy to be the one pushing her! LOL

Keep us informed of how he's doing.

Well, its actually broken down in the lower part of his tibia. Thats where he first pointed to it hurting and then moved on to saying his knee hurt. So he has a big old black (he chose black..lol) cast on for 3-4 weeks. Ugh, why couldn't this happen in the fall or spring instead of the peak of summer? Its gonna be awfully boring keeping him indoors for that long.

aww poor guy. Did they use waterproof type of cast? We found out when my son had his casts put on they have a new type of cast material that can get wet. (not sure you could swimming in it LOL) My son did not get it though. Oh and my son chose black for his second set of casts. His first set all they had was purple.

Never heard of it. That would be nice as I can't imagine what the poor child will smell like after that long of only sponge baths.

I guess it is a special liner. My sons were not that bad when they were removed but he had his changed as the swelling went down. My husband broke his hand years ago and when they took the cast off it was really BAD!! I think the thing that was the worst was how bad it made my son itch with the full arm casts.

This scares me! My son has ecezma and one spot he gets it is under the cast. I mentioned that to the doctor and he just said, "I guess, it will be worse when the cast comes off." Its a full leg cast and he was not swollen before it went on. We do have an appointment in a week to go back, but I can't imagine it being smaller.
