View Full Version : An inquisitive question on your user names

Girls. And boy!
Each of us has a user name here; some of them are kind of obvious (the children-based ones, for example), but some of them are not that easy to decipher.
So I thought I'd ask - what made you choose your user name?
Let's start with me. I "oficially" started to be Helen Vader at the time when I was writing and reading fanfiction (and was running two fanfiction websites).
But the nick is older than that. It dates back to times when I discovered Star Wars, started to write fiction and poetry in English and wished to be called Helena. ;-) Helen Vader was just a result of my Star Wars/Helena obsession combined with a firm belief of a naive teenager that an English-writing author needed an English-sounding pen name. Years later, when I decided to publish a poem at FanFiction.Net and found out that most people don't write under their real name even if it sounds English, good old Helen suddenly came in handy.
And I've been stuck with it ever since. I'm so used to it that I even turn when somebody calls "Helen". :-)))
Tell me about yours!
ETA: Just for record's sake - I no longer wish to be called Helena. I'm very happy as an Adriana. My parents were the wise ones (in the name choice any way) and I was a foolish teenager. :-)

Uh, yeah, it sounded cool when I was 19 and yahoo suggested I had the m for Mari.

Mine is b-o-i-n-g. My kids names are Addison and Judah. When Addison was 15 months old she couldn't say Addison so she called herself Aya. It stuck and my son called her that when he was little too. So Ayaaandjudah.

When I started out exploring digi-scrapping and found out that I needed a user name... I was totally clueless... so I picked mama because I was a new one... since I am the "queen bee" of my house... :)... I added Bee to the end (also helps that my name starts with a B... my family call me Beck)... At first my mom thought it was lame. LOL! Now it's part of our language... when I need scrapping time, I just have to say, "Mama Be Scrapping!" and kiddo will go off and find daddy... ;)

Alisa, I was kind of wondering about yours; never somehow really saw the "and", otherwise I would have guessed it was your kids. To me it sounded like a mysterious Indian name. :-)

That's really funny. When I first joined the digi community I signed up for DST as Aya&Judah. Apparently it caused their system to crash because of the & and so it became ayaandjudah. I guess you're right though, it does have a southeast Asian tone to it.

I used to always be mb20girl, cause I was a huuuuuuge Matchbox 20 fan. -Most people thought my initials were mb and I was 20 yrs old..lol. After mb20 went their separate ways I got really into Breaking Benjamin. And there you have it... :D I don't think it's hard to guess, but not everyone has heard of BB.

Love this question!
Back in high school when I had to come up with a username for my email, I really liked Mickey Tettleton (a baseball player for the Detroit Tigers at the time) and I also liked the movie Top Gun. So tettletop was born - I added the 20 on at the end b/c that was Mickey's # when he was with the team. tettletop20 :)
On twitter I am nascarl99. I'm a huge (HUGE) fan of Carl Edwards - Nascar driver. Nascar+Carl+his number=nascarl99. :)

I was lurking around and had to chime in...
Obviously my name is simple, I'm married (mrs) and the jb is my initials. However I always chuckle remembering why I chose it. It was about 6 years ago and I was joining a TTC message board where EVERYONE was much older than me... so I wanted a name that wouldn't give away my early twenties/newlywed status... thus, Mrs_jb was born because I thought it made me sound older and more mature! LOL! And I might add that it totally worked because most of the friends that I made there were SHOCKED to find out how old I actually was!

Well my name now is pretty self explanatory. Swerbinsky is just too long of a name (and no one can pronounce it correctly) so I like to use just Swerb.
Before that, I was BrodoNY0123. I'm from NY originally, and my birthday is 01/23. Brodo has a longer explanation, lol. One of my friends from college is 6'-7" tall. He's a giant. I'm 5'-4" on a good day. The Lord of the Rings was popular at the time, and once day he started calling me a midget, or a leprechaun, or a Hobbit. Like Frodo. But since everyone called me by my last name (Brady), Brodo instead of Frodo. And thus, BrodoNY0123 :)

Love the Brodo story!!!
And I'm pretty sure I could pronounce Swerbinsky. I smell some Eastern European ancestors there. Your husband's, I suppose (it is your married name, isn't it). :-)

I wish I could remember!!! LOL Amy Lou has been my nickname since birth. My dad named me Amy Michelle and like 2 seconds later it was Amy Lou or Lou Lou and those stuck way more. I NEVER hear the Michelle. The Miz Part?I can' t remember but I know there was a story behind it at one point :P Just been using it tooooo long to remember!

Yes you probably could! It is my married name. My father in laws family is all 100% Polish. My mother in law's family is 100% Italian (not that that has anything to do with anything, LOL!). My family is much more of a mixture, but with a maiden name of Brady, I'm sure you can guess where my father's father was from ;)

Mine is pretty self explanatory when you break it down:
newfie = a Newfoundlander....which is where I'm from and where I live
mountiewife = my DH is a member of the RCMP, aka the Mounties
I always figure I'm going to change mine to something that represents ME, not me as "Tony's wife" but I never do. I've been newfiemountiewife ever since I started posting on a mommy board on iVillage over 5 years ago. It would be weird for me to be something else!

Gabbina
07-26-2010, 10:14 AM
Mine *really* has no meaning.
The first time I got into a forum I spent a few minutes staring at the white form, thinking about the nick name I should have picked... I didn't wanna use my real name, at first, so, since I was watching Desperate Housewives while I was filling it, "Gabrielle" was the first name that came in my mind. (Stupid, I know :D ). But it was already picked, so I tried Gabri, Gabbi... nothing. I could have picked something different, I know, but I put Gabbina instead and it worked. I was like...what??
But then, since I'm lazy, I didn't go back to change it.
After, I thought it was better to keep it, so people around the digiworld could have known it was always me.
So, this is it! No meaning. :)

MichaelsMomJo
07-26-2010, 10:16 AM
Although mine is obvious, the story behind how I chose it is kind of cute. I started scrapping digitally when Michael was in preschool, but hadn't joined any forums. One afternoon at pick-up time, some of the other moms and I were chuckling about the fact that, to pre-schoolers, our only identity is as so-and-so's mom. When I would arrive to get Michael, the kids would shout out, "Hi Michael's Mom!" Jo is short for Joanne (my name). So when I started joining forums, I put it all together and become MichaelsMomJo. There's no apostrophe in Michaels because it sends some message boards and chat rooms especially into a tizzy!

When I first chose my username, I had recently had to put my grey tabby, Pewter, to sleep. He was definitely my baby at the time, and his name was all I could come up with. After he died I adopted Toby and Max, and I didn't want them to really be left out LOL, hence the tm at the end of Pewter's name.

That's debatable, lol. I don't consider that area to be upstate, considering you can drive straight North for 5 hours from where I am and still be in the state of NY, lol. And to ppl from LI, the friggen city is "upstate", lol.

The Hudson Valley, about 45 miles North of NYC. Heard of Woodbury Commons, the outlet mall? That's my hometown. :)
I used to live in the Albany area, and would go down to Peekskill once every couple of months to drill at Camp Smith with my ARNG unit. Left NY when I married an Active Army guy 13 years ago, but still remember it with fondness. That's a beautiful area!
I have multiple personality disorder on these forums :) I started out everywhere as MyBoysMom because that's what I was scrapping about mostly. When I started designing, I switched my usernames on several sites to my design name and the new sites I sign up on I typically use some variation on my real name. I use the same picture everywhere, though, so people will know they're all me!
taracotta7
07-26-2010, 12:09 PM
Growing up I had a group of girlfriends that were a few years older than me. They always had "cool" nicknames for me and I thought it was cool that they included me in their fun. So, my nicknames were Terra Cotta (as in the clay), Teradactyl (like the flying bird dinosaur) and Tiramisu (the coffee cake dessert). My fav was Terra Cotta but I wanted it spelled like my name so I changed it over the years to Taracotta. Then I added 7 because that was my favorite number as a kid and it just has stuck around. I have NO idea why it was my favorite! LOL Taracotta7 is NEVER taken on forums so it works. :)
BTW.....I am still called those nicknames by those girls. We have remained friends for over two decades!

Yes, the Catskills are gorgeous :) I adore NY and would love to move back to my hometown area, but it's just so dang expensive. Although- when I signed up for an online dating site where I ultimately met my husband my mom came up with flygirl74 because she had gotten me a piece of amber with a fly that was inside of it therefore flygirl and 74 is the year I was born. But I didnt like it because guys got the wrong idea and I surely wouldnt consider myself "fly" as the slang term goes! LOL!

Mine is just mine name..but I am quite happy with that. I transitioned to digital scrapping by making signature tags over on the MSN boards before they closed. I ran my own group for years. The tagging community knows me as RebelChick-->Rebel because I just do my own thing and don't follow the crowd and Chick so that everyone would know I was a girl.

Thanks again.
To all who think using their real name as user name is boring - if I wasn't so used to Helen Vader I'd be sure to use Adrianka instead. My real name is Adriana. Adrianka is the diminutive form that I've used for years as signature on my graphic layouts (also owned the domain adrianka.sk for a year, but wasn't able to do anything with it, as I already had and was using helenvader.net). I like it; it's just I'm too used to my virtual persona using the Helen variant instead!

This is the coolest thread ever!
My name is Kjersti so I chose that as my user name! Most people have no clue it's my real name since it's spelled so weird with that dang silent "J". My mother just wanted to TORTURE me my whole entire life!!!!! ROFL.
Kjersti is beautiful! At first I thought you were Scandinavian because of that name. I do pronounce the "j" in my mind as [kyersti], with Swedish accent and all, and believe me it's lovely that way. :-)))

When I first started hanging on the net.. I used Boo Boo Kitty (from Laverne and Shirley..it's her stuffed black cat) for a long time..then shortened it to BBK when I joined babycenter in '98.
So when I started digiscrapping in '05 I needed something a little more "grownup" or something easier to remember.. so it became lisabranka.
Lisa for my first name, then the first two letters in the names of the rest of my family. :) Many people figured my last name was Branka because my last name does start with a B :) LOL
love these kind of threads :)

We lived a block away from a 7-11 when I was in Univ., and we went for slurpees pretty much every day, so I became known as the slurpeegirl (because they make me so hyper) ... and 13 is my family's lucky number.

Oh, thank you so much!!! Most people in the States pronounce it "Kajerstee". My great great granparents are Scandinavian. My grandmother spoke Swedish and her mother (who I was named after) didn't speak any English at all!!

Mine is in two parts.
Nanie - My name is Stephanie and hubby calls me Nanie for short.
Namou - Love in French is "amour", so Namou is how I call hubby.

Mine's pretty simple, but has a cute story. Some of you might know Genevieve, she used to designs as Sweet Genevieve. Well, she & I are really good friends IRL. Actually, she's the one that got me started into digiscrapping. Well, her husband was making fun of us one day when we were talking about digiscrapping & he was like, "Y'all need your own show, & you can call it 'Digiscrapping w/Sweet Genevieve & Digideb'." So, that is where I got my user name. Obviously my name is Debbie & a lot of people just call me Deb. :)

So I guessed it right, it *is* a Scandinavian name! :-) I totally love Swedish, I learned it during my university studies just for fun. Forgot most of it by now as I had no opportunity to use it. But Kjersti really sounds beautiful with Swedish pronunciation - that language has a most wonderful melody. :-)

LOVE this thread, LOL!!
Mine is GATOR (g8r) Beckie...
My hubby and I are both Florida Gators...as in the University of Florida. So I certainly couldn't have any type of username that didn't pay homage to my beloved Florida Gators!
problem is...I realize now that people not into sports (or in the US)...frequently read it as GR8 (like GREAT beckie), not GATOR beckie :p

Mine is my first name and an abbreviated version of my last name. I think it's just easier to use a "real" name.
Another boring one here with an "L" for my first name, and my last name "Tarbox." I have had people tell me, though, that they read it as "litterbox." :) And, a lot of people also turn the "L" into an "i." But, I can see how that's a really easy mistake to make.
Kjersti - I LOVE that spelling of your name, but I can see how it could be a pain too. I have a friend named Kjrstin. We always just called her K.J.

Mine came to be when I opened an online store on hyenacart.com where I sold premade scrapbook albums (traditional sb). I was reading a writing curriculum book for work and the author talked about telling the kids that writing doesn't have to be about anything huge, but to use the small moments of every day. I thought it was perfect b/c that's what scrapbooking is about for me, too. I don't have the store anymore... but the name transferred over from traditional to digital scrapbooking. :)
Ainwena

My username came from an online MMORPG game (Everquest) back in 2001. I was creating my character, and some weird name came up with the last part as wena, and I changed it to Ainwena from a randomly generated name from the game. Since then, it has been my username for all my chars in MMORPGs and everything else. I always get funny looks when I tell people my email address. Most of my online friends (who I don't talk to outside of the games) call me Ain ;). The weird thing is, I answer to it! LOL

I've had my username forevah ~ well at least since I (finally) married my hubby after 10 years of dating him. So my username consists of my initials (gms) and our wedding date (5-9-97). I've been dying for a new cool username, but still haven't gotten around to it. Any suggestions?

If you've ever misspelled my name by putting two Ns in it, you get my username.
Check out my sig if you need another hint.
I have been using this on EVERYTHING since forever, probably at least 10 years. I saw someone's username once that was "KristyYnotI" (Kristy, Y not I) or something, and it sparked the idea for joana-one-N (joana1n). It's awesome b/c no one else uses it.
Fun thread!!!
Mine's super boring. Just my name. :)

I love Kjersti, too. And since I have a Norwegian friend with that name I figured it had the "y" sound in there lol.
Love all your stories about your names, ladies.
Mine, unfortunately, is not an interesting story. My full first name is unpronounceable to most everyone in the world lol, and after I moved to the US, and then to China, I decided to simply go for the short version - Sula.
When I first started posting layouts in the gallery, I had no intention of getting any more involved than that, so I didn't think much of a nick name, simply thought: I'm Sula, I'm designing layouts, well, that's it! lol!

When my youngest daughter started college (600 miles away from home), my older daughter had dropped out of school and was working. I wanted a way to keep in touch with my younger daughter, and hotmail has just been introduced.
The college she chose was Le Tourneau University. LeTU + mom. I didn't even think about including anything in my user name that represented my other daughter's school.
Now I've used this sooooo many places: forums, email, facebook. I don't think I could change it if I wanted to.

Mine was an old high school nickname. Crystal was close to my first name (Christy) and bird was sorta similar to my maiden name. Or not - you know how weird nicknames get started. It was a while before it crossed my mind (even knowing a few Crystals and Birds) that it probably looks like an actual first and last name. :)

Well mine's a bit obvious. Just wanted to chime in and say I loved reading everyone's stories :)
My first ever username was for the girlfriend magazine website. It was groovychick52 (LOL) - groovy chick because I was obsessed with bang on the door stationary and 52 because that was my house number.
I use Ebony everywhere now. Except at the digichick (it was taken) where I use ebonyarwen (My first name and second middle name) :)

Ebs, if your second middle name is Arwen, might your parents be Lord of the Rings fans? Or does the name really exist outside the Tolkien universe?

Mine is really boring but whatever ...
Nine years ago a friend begged me to enter a chatroom, so I had to choose a nickname. I didn't have a lot of time and therefore just typed in the first one that came to mind. It was July(=Juli in German) 2001 and my first name is Julia, so I became juli001. I have used this username ever since. Sometimes there's already a juli001, but not at SSD! Lucky me:)

I have been using 'cal' in a few places - my initials - but I am getting bored of this, and have now become 'corinnz' which is a mix of my name - Corinne, and NZ (New Zealand) which is where I call home these days. No where as creative as quite a few of the names here.
