ISO easy to understand tutorial for using templates

I am just learning Photoshop Elements 8 and am trying out some templates...only I don't know what I'm doing, lol I know that it's pretty straightforward, with the layers being just like the layers on a paper page, but somehow...my brain isn't computing :unsure: I end up with layers all over the place, duplicating layers when I don't want to, moving layers when I don't want to...ahhhh...please send help!!
