View Full Version : What are you reading now? (or lately...)
I have been reading quite a bit this summer - I read the whole Twilight series again (brain candy lol) and I reead through 3 of Jane Austen's books - Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, and Persuasion. And I started the Outlander series and am on book 3. I also finished recently, Anna Quindlan's Every Last One (was very good) and Jodi Piccoult's House Rules.
I need more suggestions! Where do you get book ideas? I just wander around the library and am never sure what to pick up. If I think of a book I want at home - I'll look it up on the library website and the waiting list is always 97 people . Ok - book ideas please?

I am currently reading "The Lovely Bones." Before that I read "The Time Travelers Wife" and before that the whole Sookie Stackhouse series. Next on my list is the Outlander series.
I suggest going on www.goodreads.com. I have an account there and you can have friends and see what they read and how they rate the books, etc. etc. Here is me on Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/friend/i?i=LTM2MDMwMTY3Mjk6Mzcy

I was gonna suggest goodreads too! I actually haven't read at ALL during the summer, I seem to go in strange phases where all I want to do is read and then I have trouble picking up a book. Goodreads has been fabulous though in introducing me to books and authors I wouldn't have looked at before :)
There are a bunch of us girls from ssd there! :) pretty sure i'm kristincb there too.

Well.. Jeff bought me this (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00314245000P?prdNo=19) for our 10th anniversary, so I'm currently stalking the ebook library lending site and wishlisting books so I can d/l when it gets here.
So... right now I have Debbie Macomber's Midnight Sun series, the new JD Robb, some Nora Roberts, all 3 Charlotte Hughes books and a Jennifer Cruisie book.

I'm currently reading Eat, Pray, Love. Just started it, but I really like it so far.
Before that I read The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks -- not my favorite of his, but it was good. I also just finished up Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. LOVED that one. Sorta reminded me of the movie Beaches. Just a good, good story.

I'm currently reading Grave Sight (http://www.amazon.com/Grave-Sight-Harper-Connelly-Mysteries/dp/0425205681) by Charlaine Harris (author of the Sookie books) and then I have The Hunger Games (http://www.amazon.com/Hunger-Games-Suzanne-Collins/dp/0439023483/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1283271917&sr=1-1-spell) to read after that. When I'm done those, I have an order to Amazon that'll have to go through to get the next books in those 2 series.

I usually only read non-fiction books: cookbooks, parenting books, etc.
I highly recommend Sandra Boynton, but maybe that's not the kind of book you are looking for. :p
I own a lot of Sandra Boynton, thanks L. ;)

I'm currently on the last of the Stieg Larsson books. I LOVED the 2nd book, The Girl Who Played With Fire and just started the 3rd yesterday, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo was a bit freaky for me...I won't get into the fact that after falling asleep reading it while I was at my mom's house this past summer, I ended up walking around her creaky house with a kitchen knife. Heh.

i'm reading Private and next on my list is The Postcard Killers (both James Patterson)...a good one that I read a really long time ago that I recently recommended to a friend was The Winner by David Baldacci :)
I want to read "The Girl Who" books next too!
Just last night, I finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's dark and definitely not for everyone, but I LOVED it. Now, I'm reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
I have a VERY long list of books to read including the Hunger Games series, the Steig Larson books, and many, many others.
I love goodreads.com. If anyone wants to add me, I'm here: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/973630

I am going through Victoria Laurie's Psychic Eye and Ghost Hunter Series. They are easy and fun reads. She is a psychic that started writing fiction novels. The Psychic Eye series is about a psychic that works with Police and FBI to solve crimes. I really like her characters in these books. She also has a children's series of books she just started as well.
Here (http://www.victorialaurie.com/booksbyvictoria.html) is a link to her website.

Honestly? I'm rereading the entire Harry Potter series before the next movie comes out later this year. I'm about 2/3 through the final book. Then I'm moving back to the Percy Jackson series. I read The Lightning Thief last week and enjoyed it. It was an easy, fast read. Before that I read the Gemma Doyle series by Libba Bray - A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels & The Sweet Far Thing. It was almost too much "otherworld" for me to handle but it was a good read overall. :)

I"m reading a few books...in the middle of Eat, Pray, Love which is really good so far. I have a lot going on right now and haven't been able to really stop and read but I"m aching to get back to it.
I'm also reading Women, Food, and God..I saw it on Oprah earlier this year and just now started it (Wasn't quite ready to go there..I have food issues) So far it's pretty thought provoking.

Oh, I loved Mockingjay and the whole Hunger Games series. I'm thinking about picking up Chesney's Percy Jackson books, but I just have no time and/or energy to read. I have to block out the time in my schedule and I'd rather scrapbook right now.
I read the entire Sookie Stackhouse series this summer. Loved it so much I won't watch the TV show.
I always love John Sandford, Janet Evanovich, Faye Kellerman, Jonathan Kellerman, and Nora Roberts/JD Robb. My new favorite is Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder mysteries... they are about a formerly Amish woman who is now chief of police in her hometown. Love them.

I would recommend anything by Kristin Hannah. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors. My list of must reads from her are Firefly Lane, True Colors and Winter Garden. :) I think most of her books are good though!
I have read the Sookie series and enjoyed it. I will say that I thought the first couple of books were a little slow but by book 3 it was good.
I am also a fan of Nicholas Sparks. The Last Song is great! Really, you can't go wrong with his books.
I just bought Eat, Pray, Love but haven't started it yet. I am sure it will be good though with all the reviews I read on it.
Also, I finished The Blossom Street Series by Debbie Macomber. I really enjoyed it.
Currently reading A Little Death in Dixie by Lisa Turner. I am only on Chapter 3 so really don't have a review at this time. I am reading it due to a recommendation from a friend. We will see.
I love threads like this! It makes me find more books to add to my wish list!

Wow, Emmy. I didn't realize you were into such deep books...
This summer I have read Crazy Love, The Happiness Project, What the Dog Saw & Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, Super Freakonomics, The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson and a couple of cookbooks. I still haven't cooked, but at least I've read the books, right?
The only fiction novel I've read was Liz Curtis Higgs' most recent book, Here Burns My Candle; I couldn't put it down, but I feel that way about all of her books, even when I reead them.

Liz Curtis Higgs'
I hosted her for a weekend in 2000 when she did a speaking tour for my church. She is just so so sweet! And oh my gosh she is funny! I seriously hurt from laughing so much :) But I haven't read anything current from her. I'll have to remedy that!

The Passage by Justin Cronin was SO good - finished it last week. Mockingjay is next for me.
Wow, Emmy. I didn't realize you were into such deep books...
I am a deep, deep person K. People have no idea. :p
I loved Outliers - read that one on your recommendation btw. I also read a lot of parenting books but I don't consider that fun reading, that's for my "day job". :D
I have some great ideas from this thread - thanks all.
