I don't know if you all remember me saying I was going to attempt this cake but I finished it and we devoured it this weekend. Figured I'd share!

I used cake mixes. I used home-made buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant that Nikki had linked to. I used spray on silver edible coloring that I found at Michaels and rice crispie treats. I pretty much followed what the professional did on this site (http://www.bsideblog.com/2008/06/making-the-most-amazing2-d2-cake-ever/) but used fondant instead of ganache for the covering. Oh and I made it out of 6" cakes instead of 8" cakes. Less wasted cake that way!

Kyle loved it and so it was worth it in the end. But man oh man are my arms tired from that marshmallow fondant! It may taste better, but it is a lot harder to work with than the pre-packaged stuff IMHO! Especially when you are making three batches of it!

You are such a cool mom! Our Star Wars party had asteroid cakes (cup cakes covered in silver and black sugar). That was as far as I was able to take it, but this is simply amazing!

and yes, the mm fondant is a lot of work. I'm sure it does taste better, but I still don't like to eat it on cakes!

Oh, and I meant to say that your cake looks AWESOME! What a lot of work - but I'm sure it will be remembered & talked about for years to come, and that makes it ALL worth it!

I've only made MM once, and it was a lot of work, but tasted super yummy!

Mari,

Check out the Toy Story cake my friend made:

maybe you can do something simplified (gray/green layer, brown layer, white and black layer with toy story toys all around. Try the premade fondant at Michaels, it is just like playdough to roll out and then cut out and play with.
