do you immediately put them on your EHD? I am really just learning now how these things work. We had to buy a new one because our dog accidentally broke the other one (long story/we are hoping to get the data retrieved as soon as we can get to the city). I bought a small EHD (love the portability!) and backed up my photos and digi kits the other night. Since then, I've downloaded a few more kits and some photos from dd's VB game.

Do you back up everytime you download stuff or do you wait and do it, say every other week or once a month? When I go to back up the new files, I am assuming that I can just click on the ones I want (that I don't have to back everything up all over again)?

I store nothing on my hard drive from my computer. Everything goes directly on to my EHD, then once a month, I back up everything onto my portable EHD.

Like Mari, I store nothing on my computer. Everything is on my EHD #1. EHD #2 automatically backs up the contents of EHD #1. And I subscribe to Mozy on-line back-up which runs nightly.

I use the software on my EHD #2 for backing up. It checks the contents of EHD #1 and itself for differences and then automatically makes them sync (mirror) each other. You should not have to back up everything from scratch monthly. (That is, just back up the newly added files...)

I know! Pretty cool, eh? I just bought my EHD #2 and it came with software to make them sync. It's a Western Digital My Book Elite 1 TB EHD. I got it at Costco.

My computer's HD has a scratch or s.th. and quite often corrupts some of my files (esp. those huge psd layout files) which is quite frustrating. So I usually immediately copy my stuff to several different places, and though I know that DVDs don't stay good for more than a couple years (I'm sure 8-10 years from now I won't need much of my current scrapbooking supplies), as soon as my stuff is enough to fill one DVD I burn it. I can fill 2-3 DVDs a month just with the newest kits and stuff I purchase.

Just yesterday, the folder with one of my newest kits was corrupted when I tried to use some of Shawna's & Jenn's elements and papers. But I had just burnt a DVD with my latest purchases a few hours earlier, so I wasn't even bothered having to delete that corrupted folder and replace it by the intact one from the DVD.

All I'm saying is: you won't regret making sure you're stuff is backed-up frequently. The frustration comes when you realize you've lost stuff for good and to retrieve that is a lot more trouble than backing-up everything as soon as you purchase it.

I seriously need to figure out how to sync...although I have more files on EHD than HD.

I try to back up once a month, if I'm procrastinating then I don't get to it, except for sure every 3 months. I just spent a few hours last night/this morning backing up to DVD & EHD (3 months worth --family pictures, client images, scrapping stuff).

I have a buffalo personal server... For one off downloads, such as my CT requirements, I put them on my hard drive and then when I'm done scrapping it goes on to the server... for big downloads like Sweet Rewards, the go automatically up onto the server... then nightly the server is auto synced to an EHD and then once a week synced up to Mozy. All my layouts automatically get saved on to the server.

I download straight to my EHD

EHD #1 (300 GB) has my scrapping stuff on it except SSD stuff (I ran out of room and am waiting to get a bigger portable EHD..waiting paitently)

Computer HD has my pictures and SSD stuff on it

EHD #2 (1TB) backs up every Sunday at 1:00...checking for new stuff only on my computer's HD and new stuff on EHD #1

Pictures are on my computer, DH's computer at home and work and online...his computer is also backed up on a network HD..nightly.

Sweet! I've been wondering the best way to backup all my digi files. If I lost all my kits and layouts, I would FREAK!
