For those looking for canned pumpkin

I know some people are having trouble finding canned pumpkin for their recipes. I saw some at Walgreens. No guarantees but I never would have thought of looking there. Hope this helps someone.

My local grocery stores are loaded with it, but we live in Vermont so most people here buy fresh pie pumpkins to cook with.... because they're everywhere in my area. (Even in my own backyard :p )

Is a pie pumpkin different than a regular pumpkin?

Yes, Colleen. Pie Pumpkins are sweeter (not sugary) and better tasting than the carving pumpkins which are bred to be big and tasteless. You can use them (we always love them for roasting the seeds), and they're still pumpkin, but they don't taste as good as pie pumpkins.

I saw some canned pumpkin pie at the grocery store on Saturday. I don't know if our area was terrible affected (Iowa) but we definitely have canned for now!

They had tons at Sam's Club, but we are in New Hampshire and my friend had a huge crop of 32 this year!

Last year I had an impossible time around Thanksgiving finding canned pumpkin. This year I'm stocking up early for all my pumpkin recipes! Thanks for the reminder to add it to the grocery list!

I read an article that Libby (who makes something like 90% of the canned pumpkin in the US) had a bad harvest last year with all the rain they got, which is why most places ran out after Thanksgiving last year. They said they planted more and earlier this year and that canned pumpkin should be stocked in stores just fine this year. Whew! :)

Umm... I did not know you could buy canned pumpkin. I'm in like awe. My mom always used real pumpkins and made sure to freeze up enough to last her through the year and have there be enough for me to make a few pumpkin things.

just saw a news report about this last night saying there should not be a shortage this year, but in case there is I will head to Darcy's and raid her pantry!! :p
