any tips? Suggestions? Are most things usable to serve on even if they aren't dishwasher save or stovetop/oven safe?

I went to a party at one of those paint your own pottery places last fall. I made a large scallop edge bowl and painted it with our favorite team colors. We use it for chips/snacks when we are watching football. I'm pretty sure that the glazes are food safe, but you can ask when you get there to be sure. I definitely wash by hand and with chips they really don't get any large amount of direct contact with the bowl so I'm personally not worried.
I would recommend doing a fun serving piece for the Holidays or maybe a decorative plate to be used for special occassions. I think if you go in realizing that your piece is going to come out looking handpainted and not like something you'd buy in a store (which is a nice thing) then you'll be pretty happy with your finished piece!

As long as they glaze and put it in a kiln it will be fine to serve on.

Our place makes them food safe. My little sister and I like to go when she comes to visit.

We love those places! I think they are fine for the dishwasher glazed - I love the huge bowls and the dog dishes - You should get a ton of ideas from the displays! Last time Dylan did a mug for me and I love drinking from it - he always reminds me he made it for me!
