I just accepted a great job offer and I am so very excited! I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in 2006 and have never rejoined the workforce (just held a few temp jobs). When I graduated I was 7 months pregnant so I had an excuse, and then I've been working from home for the last few years.

Well, I knew marrying James was going to change things. Working from home part-time, the kids and I qualified for state paid insurance. Marrying James increased our household income to an amount where we wouldn't qualify for it anymore. The problem was, he didn't have access to insurance through his job either. He pays a high amount every month for private insurance.

So, immediately after our wedding I started looking for a job, hoping the right one would come along that would provide insurance for me and the kids. The kids were being temporarily covered but I lost my insurance 5 weeks ago.

Today I got an offer I couldn't refuse from a major computer company :) The pay is great, it's 20 minutes from my house, with day 1 benefits and I start Monday!

James stressed for months about me marrying him and losing our insurance. I kept telling him, "It would be wrong for me to marry you to get insurance. Just like it would be wrong for me not to marry you to keep insurance." I knew that there was no reason for me to live my life in fear when I am a fully capable and competent person of providing for myself and my children. So I took a leap of faith that it would all turn out in the end, and wouldn't you figure, it did! :)

Thanks, Paula!

Oh, and for the record this is totally why I was asking about the car. I can work from home without a car, but I don't think walking 20 miles to work and back would be much fun :p

Congrats, Lena! That must be a huge relief.

I have to admit I'm still puzzled by the US system of insurance. How can anyone end up WITHOUT insurance? I think I would need a lecture, but let's not spoil this thread with it; I'll start an inquisitive thread one day when I feel like procrastinating.

Enjoy your work, Lena, but first of all enjoy the upcoming weekend! ;-)

this lecture could last for days...there ARE benefits of having private insurance vs a country with uniform health care but there's a whole demographic of people that are above the line for state funded health care but can't afford to provide their own. It really is a screwed up system and full of crooked, money hungry politicians...blah

Sounds screwed up alright. It's very much not right not to be covered; must be totally stressful. :-( I do need the lecture one day, if there will be someone willing to explain, but that will take some time I suppose, so let's wait for those long winter evenings. :-)

Thanks for the short introduction, Meg. Will come back for more one of these days. :-)
