I want to buy a few Christmas songs to add to my "collection." I don't like the super traditional arrangements or the old cheesy "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" songs, but I do love the traditional songs in different/new arrangements. Like, I love O Holy Night, but don't want some operatic version... but no Jessica Simpson or Mariah Carey (can't stand them). lol
A capella - especially a group of men - is awesome too.
Hit me with your faves!

"Christmas Eve (Sarajevo)" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra is my all time #1 most favorite Christmas song.
But there are no lyrics, it's instrumental. LOL!
I haven't started listening to my christmas music yet to give you more of my faves, but Madonna's "Santa Baby" is another favorite (and no one else will ever do a better version IMO).

Yes, any Trans-Siberian Orc! I love Martina McBride's CD white Christmas....has O Holy Night on it. She's amazing even if you don't like country (Christmas CD not really countrified)
Josh Groban has some good ones too. I like the traditional stuff though ;)

I just had to take a peek at my Christmas playlist in iTunes to find some favorites -
Colbie Caillat - Mistletoe
Glee Cast - Last Christmas (will be getting their Christmas CD too)
My Chemical Romance - All I Want For Christmas Is You (I'm a rock girl so I had to throw this one in there lol, I know MCR isn't for everyone though I do love the Mariah Carey version too)
Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong CD
Straight No Chaser's Holiday Spirits CD (I need to get their Christmas Cheers CD too though I believe they have a new one called All I Want For Christmas that is a compilation of the two CD's)

I like Loreena McKennitt's "A Midwinter's Night Dream". It contains Christmas carols in her typical arrangements, which, IMHO, helps to make the songs fresh. If you like that kind of style, that is.

Thank you, ladies!! I'm gonna have to look some of these up! And I love Josh Groban (already have his Noel album)... I just don't care for like Pavarotti type Christmas music. He's talented, don't get me wrong, just not what I'm wanting. hehe

I also like the Mediaeval Baebes' Mistletow & Wine album and Blackmore's Night' Winter Carols. If you like Loreena McKennit, check out Winter Carols

Amanda, I would LOVE to see your Christmas playlist, we have a lot of our musical tastes in common.
And I agree with all those who mentioned TSO. I have a playlist that's nothing but their Christmas music. Totally <3 it.

You asked for it Sally. This is not all of it. I have TSO and others on the laptop but have not moved them over to the desktop.

You can always put some you like in Pandora--it'll make a station and then maybe you can find things there you like?
We fell in love with a song last Christmas--it's not actually a Christmas song, just a Christian song, but all the stations played it here... anyway... it's called "How Many Kings" by Downhere. Totally not traditional and doesn't sound Christmasy, but we love it!

I do both. Anything from the past couple years has been in iTunes.
eta: I started my collection in 1995 with the Carpenters Christmas CD.

I am about to click "buy" on the Glee Christmas album, which is like heaven set to musical notes for me!
I also love Tonic Sol Fa, though I don't own any of their albums, just saw them in concert last Christmas and they were awesome! But I find that a lot of the country artists have excellent Christmas songs - I set my Pandora to Country Christmas and can be happy for hours!

The Beach Boys have a fantastic Christmas album that is popular in our household. When you said a male group that sometimes sing a capella, they are the first group I thought of.
Also, Harry Connick Jr. has some nice Christmas songs.
Another favorite in our house is the Home Alone Soundtrack.
There is also a group called "Voice Male" with a Christmas album called "Jingles" that I believe is mostly a capella.
We listen to Christmas music year round, we love it so much!

I bought it the other day and I love most of it. Not a fan of a couple of the songs, but it's still a thumps up. :) I have to say I just LOVED "Baby It's Cold Outside" on it but I couldn't figure out who was singing it. The female lead especially stumped me. Then I googled and found out who was singing it and I laughed my head off that I didn't realize who it was singing. They did a GREAT job on that song. :) If you are a fan of Glee, go to iTunes and preview that song.

:: dies :: Okay, new favourite version of that song. I have always loved the Elf version, but that just topped it. Course, I knew INSTANTLY who it would be before I even clicked over, when you said that.... Love love love love love.
Also, their God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen made me cry. I have to have this album now.
