I am over the moon right now! I volunteered to take pics at the girls' school for any events the teachers/parents might want pics of, I'm willing to print at home and pass out pics too - LOL, anything that gets me through the door with my camera so I can catch my girls on camera! Well, they are letting me take pics of the Kindergarten Feast on Tues... Turns out it's more than just Chloe's class like I originally thought it was, so I asked my soontobe BIL if I could borrow his awesome camera, just in case my little pos flakes on me like it does sometimes, and he gave it to me tonight so I can practice with it before Tues comes around!

I could seriously pee my pants, I'm so excited right now! I've never even held a camera this big before! There aren't enough emoticons in the world to describe how excited I am... It's so cool! I don't have a clue how to work it, or what anything on it means, but I turned it on and snapped a few random pics, and I'm melting...
Isn't she purdy? lol, sry, I had to gush a bit, and I knew you ladies would understand how excited I am!

I have the Canon Rebel XTi ... and I still feel like I'm on a dream cloud when I use it! I tell you what ... the "auto" mode works in many many situations. I'd just advise practicing with the MANUAL mode some ... and the flash settings (check the menu button) ... because if their school is anything like what our elementary school was like ... the lights made the colors strange ... and I sure wish I had had this camera when the boys went there ... my pictures could have been 100 times better! ... go in on Monday into the room (if at all possible) it will be held in ... and just play with the settings.
I'm not a fancy photographer ... I mainly keep things in auto or manual settings ... but when in manual play with the speed of the shutter, the flash settings (menu button), and the white balance.
Check out this link to find the manual:

Hopefully this site will help you figure it out quick ... ran across it when I did a search:

Have fun with it ... oh and take a lot of pictures to "practice with" between now and Tuesday. ;-)

What a great BIL!! I bet it does feel awesome!
Have fun and try not to stress too much! I volunteered to take DS's baseball team photos (group and individual) and I HATED myself for it since I was stressing for two weeks afterward to get everything perfect. Which it wasn't! But in the end they all loved it, so don't stress too much, I'm sure the parents are just grateful for any photos of the event you give them!

Yes, I'm so excited. I'm gonna try not to stress too much, any pics are better than no pics, so I'm sure they won't be expecting the best photos ever - they know I'm no pro lol.
Hmmm...I think I'm definately going to have to take a lot of practice pics with this thing :D I wish I had something planned this weekend, too, to get some more use out of it - my girls are gonna be tired of me following them around with this thing!

How exciting! I too only have a point-and-shoot (and it's an old POS if you know what I mean!) But like you said, some pics are better than no pics. Let us know what you think once you've played a bit... I think I want a new camera, but the "big ones" intimidate me too! I need something that takes gorgeous pics, but is easy too. yes... I'm lazy that way.... :)

YAY! have fun with it!!
I rented a camera Lens for the week of Thanksgiving...so I've been playing with it for the past 24 hrs and I know exactly how you feel!!
Also - I've steered a few folks this way and they haven't regretted it one bit...but the Canon T2i is a freakin' awesome camera! compact and lightweight, good "auto shooter" features, but also PLENTY of room to grow into a manual shooter as well.
I've held it and used it a few times...it's pretty slick :)
Just my Canon PSA for the day! :)

I just have the low end Rebel, but my brother let me play with his 50D once and I was in love, too. Have fun!

How cool!!
I agree with Sharon....the flash settings and the changing the white balance will make all the difference! Especially in the weird school lighting if you shoot in Manual or A, Tv, or P. Try changing even to one of the available presets like Florescent if that's the lighting they have. You're almost always better off shooting without the auto white balance on with the Canon. (I have a Canon....but that makes mine look shabby!!)
Have fun! And you'll be **thrilled** with the pics, even if you shoot in Auto mode the entire time!
I'd just advise practicing with the MANUAL mode some ... and the flash settings (check the menu button) ... because if their school is anything like what our elementary school was like ... the lights made the colors strange ...

That is awesome!! I have a Nikon D60 that I got almost 2 years ago, and I am just now learning how to shoot in Manual.. LOL! Last year I took all the pics at my daughter's Christmas Party at her daycare. Each one of the kids had to have their pictures taken with Santa. I printed them all out and took them in.. Whew, talk about tough. But in the end everyone loved it!
