Hello ladies! I need help finding a tutorial on how to put a drop shadow on a transparent element. It just makes the whole thing dark when you do it regular. Anybody know how or have some tips? Thanks in advance!

This is something emmasmommy wrote in my topic about shadows:

I duplicate the item, move the duplicate under the original, open the style box, and ((shoot going off memory since I'm at my mom's and can't open and look at CS)) looking in the side of the styles box look at the first or second option (not Blending Modes... maybe it's um General (?) completely remove the opacity of it (do not do this with the opacity in the layers palate or it affects the styles too) then go to shadows and apply your shadow, that keeps it from spreading through the entire acrylic piece and giving it a funky look.

Hope this helps for you.

It depends on what program you are using .. and even then there are several ways.

Here is how I do it in PS.

Apply your drop shadow layer style
Detach the shadow layer by clicking on the drop shadow on your layer palette and right clicking and selecting create layer
Go back and click your element layer & create a selection
While your selection is enabled, click on your shadow layer
Delete

I use PS and what I usually do is shadow the element normally, then make the shadow a separate layer by right-clicking on the fx symbol and click "create layer". Then I'll erase the part of the shadow that's under the element.

for PSE I use Jessica Sprague's tutorial... found HERE (http://www.jessicasprague.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=415:add-dropshadows-to-acrylic-alphabets&catid=23:drawing-tools-and-patterned-paper)
