I need some ideas for some decorative "art" for my kitchen. My kitchen is really long and all the "stuff" in it is on either side so both end walls are bare. This is the east end:
Right of the window

Left of the window:

I want to do "something" on either side of the window but I'm just not sure what. This is also right above our kitchen table.
Here is the west side of the room. Now we know we want a big clock right in the middle above the microwave/stand it sits on. And then I want "something" on either side of it.

Oh and that phone jack is not there anymore, we ripped it out and filled it in before we painted...so no need to "work around it"!!!
Also our kitchen is yellow now:

So hit me with some good ideas....I'm not opposed to putting pictures of the kids up...but I have those everywhere in the house and I just want something different for the kitchen!! Oh and we just got rid of a border full of god awful veggies...

........so maybe nothing with peppers!! :p :D :D

Maybe some curtains in a funky fabric? I love Joel Dewberry (http://www.joeldewberry.com/) fabrics. You could hang them higher and wider that the window.
I will have an empty wall in my kitchen and am going to order this:

Or what about a curtain wire with clips to hang artwork/pictures from:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20079342
I used the Dignitet for the faux curtains in our playroom (more sturdy) and the Deka for their artwork.

Hey did you paint the other room yet? I was wondering the other day if you choose a color. I am so nervous about the gray I choose.

If you wanted to do some quotes or sayings, I've been using this site WiseDecor (http://www.wisedecor.com/decor/wall-lettering/kitchen/) for sayings for my recipe book.

what about framing (with mouldings from a home improvement store) an area and painting it with chalkboard paint? Then you could write notes, to-do lists, dates, grocery lists etc on it...Im thinking about doing that in our kitchen since we are redoing it right now.

I think the curtain idea is great!
My other thought was some little shelves (anywhere). You could do 2 short shelves on either side of anything. I LOVE shelf space because you can change it up (or not) and put anything on there.
As far as "art" you could also make some fabric covered panels (or canvases or whatever) and put a set of 2 or 3 on either side (vertically maybe?) kind of like these:
http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2010/06/decorate-my-home-part-19-3-d-framed.html
or these:
http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2010/02/decorate-my-home-part-9-wall-hangings.html
(different sizes of course)
I'm not a plate person, but you could do a plate wall or something like this (again vertically): http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2010/03/decorate-my-home-part-12-decorate-with.html

Oh just wanted to add you can make your own chalkboard paint in just about any color you wanted. It doesnt have to be black/dark gray. Here is the link to make it yourself:
http://www.marthastewart.com/article/make-custom-color-chalkboard-paint
So what is really cool about that is you could do the calendar like what Amanda posted but make it whatever color you wanted it to be by just taping off the area you wanted to paint.

I use food related pictures of my family. (Lots of baking Christmas cookies, etc.)

Oh I do have curtains...but they aren't hung yet...I found some AWESOME vintage sheets at my Goodwill and I just need to cut them out and sew them!!!
I'd love to do a decal....but we have those crappy textured plastered "swirl" walls!!! I wanna sand those suckers down some days!! Could you imagine that mess!?!?! :D
Yes I painted, I actually went with both gray colors...light on top and dark on the bottom with a chair rail...but again I need to get curtains up....I'll give you a sneak peek in another thread!!! ;)

I like the idea of using chalkboard paint and framing it with trim since you have bumpy walls.
And the plate wall idea! http://runninglawyer.blogspot.com/2010/02/home-project-diningoom-plate-wall.html
And the empty frame idea: http://theinspiredroom.net/2011/03/08/love-fun-simple-gallery-wall-idea/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wordpress%2FwoWq+%28The+Inspi red+Room%29

Oh I love both those ideas!!! I'm just giddy thinking of searching for all kinds of vintage plates!!!! And I could paint the frames in all shades of white/black/gray and it would help tie the kitchen to the mud room (the room we just painted gray)!!

I have one of my short walls covered in 12x12 scrapbook layouts. They have no theme but the look is tied together with the use of all black frames. They are not hung in a grid but rather somewhat random. It looks pretty cool.

I saved the link at Christmas b/c I knew we were painting the kitchen soon and I wanted something fun for the walls. Anyways I lost my bookmarks so I did a search for it in the forum. Took me awhile. I ordered a print for the laundry room too lol
