so here is the deal...my laptop broke and I am in need of a new one...I want a MAC but I have to convince my DH that I need a more expensive computer when he can get me a PC that can do all the EXACT same things as a MAC...so here is his proposal:
*YOU* will present 3 candidates to me. 3 choices of laptops. An Apple can certainly be among the choices, but I want pro’s and cons for each one. We’ll nail it down from those 3
Now here is where I need help...I have NO IDEA about pros and cons, I just know I want a MAC....and I don't know ANYTHING about computers other than how to use PS and surf and use word...so can anybody help me out?????

have you checked consumer reports? I cant tell you the pros and cons of a computer. I had two HP desktops before getting my laptop so that is the main reason I went with an HP laptop instead of some other brand.

Mac- I prefer the iMac over a Macbook/Pro but I just love the huge screen and I think you get more out of a desktop for the $$ than a laptop
Pros-Super fast, less chance of viruses, no waiting on useless programs to load, and pictures/graphics overall look amazzzing on the mac
Cons-Have to purchase new software for the Mac platform and that might not be in the budget after splurging for a mac, sometimes software is only avail in Windows, more $$$--HOWEVER I think if you customize a PC to have the functionality/speed of a Mac (i don't think you can compare 4gb mac to 4gb pc b/c of the amt of memory pc programs take to run) then your PC will be $$$ as well...they are more affordable "as is" now on the market but there's no way a $500 PC can function like an 1200 Mac
The cons IMO definitely do NOT outweigh the pros..if you can afford it I say go for it!
PC-
Pros-cheaper, lots of software available, won't have to repurchase Photoshop (or PSE)
Cons-less reliable, memory hogs, replace more often..cheaper basically to buy a newer model than to fix/update an older one..they aren't made to last years and years like Macs (again my opinion)

I'm totally not a Mac fan, but I think that you don't actually have to repurchase if you switch platforms. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the licence can be switched to the new platform. I'd check this, it would make the decision FOR the Mac easier.

P.S. From what I found here I think I was right about the "no need to re-buy":

I have to say that for the money Adobe asks for their products they should allow people to use PS in both platforms at the same time, but I'm not running the company, eh.

I think it depends on what version of PS you have... if it's a current version than you can probably get the Mac version but if it's an old version than you'd probably have to purchase the new version with Mac platform. At least, I think that's how Adobe works.

If you don't know why you want a Mac, then why do you want one? :D

Well - I work off both platforms... my desktop is a Mac and my laptop is a PC.
For me it came down to $$$$... for the power that I wanted in my laptop which is my primary computer, my hubby said no to the mac.... so I have a custom built Dell that is pretty much the most powerful laptop on the market, well at least it was in December... :D
But if money was no issue - I'd get a Mac hands down! And my only advice... don't skimp on the Mac... I got a discontinued model because it was "cheaper"... and I'm not 100% happy that I did that ...My Mac desktop is a bit divaish... and doesn't like PSE4 (yes, that is 4, not a typo...) but for everything else that I use it for... I LOVE it!

May I suggest presenting him with a MacBookAir, MacBook and MacBookPro? :D
A Mac in a lot of ways is like buying a luxury car - there are cheaper options that will get you where you need to go, but you pay the price premium for the overall experience and features that come with luxury car.
My advice would be to focus on the experience of using the Mac OS, things like:
the way the hardware and software are tightly integrated so everything runs more efficiently
the more stable and secure OS - little worry about crashes and viruses
the awesome features/software that come standard with the OS
If you try to convince him based on specs and price alone, I think you'll have a tough time convincing him the extra cost is worth it.
Good luck, I  my Mac!
