I'm a hardcore pc user but am tempted to get a mac.

Does PS work on a mac? What about all the kits I've bought. Can I use those?

I was a lifelong PC user, too, until about three months ago. My hubby talked me into getting a Mac. Photoshop works pretty much the same as it did on my PC. I used Elements, though I'm fairly certain it'd be the same for either. And all my kits work just the same as well. :)

Adobe has always actually design the Creative Suite for Macs and rewritten the programs for PCs so it works better on a MAC less/no crashing. PCs are designed for crunching numbers, MACs are designed for creativity so you'll be surprised how much better all your scrapping related needs are fulfilled on a MAC.

Yes this! Even your screen just MAKES it look better! It is crazy. I love my Macbook Pro. :)

If you don't have the most recent version of PS, you will need to purchase it specifically for your MAC (the PC version doesn't work on MACs). If you have the most recent version, Adobe will provide you with the MAC version at no extra charge. Lightroom works on either MACs or PCs and is not platform-specific. You will also need to re-purchase word, etc ... for MAC.

Instead of getting Word for your Mac, you can get Open Office, which is an open source word processor/database/spreadsheet/drawing program/presentation suite. It is free and is compatible with Word formatted documents. You can also get Inkscape which is an open source illustration program.

I have Open Office because I've been too lazy to buy word, but it's really not the same. I'm an expert user of Microsoft products, so I actually miss many of the functionalities of those programs ... but I agree OO, is a good {free} alternative, especially if you're just using those programs for the basics.

You'll have no problems with the kits or photos. If you have an EHD, you'll have to allow Mac to read it. As for PS, like Sheri said, if you have the most recent version, you can get a Mac upgrade. I did that with my CS3.

As for word processing, I have Office Mac and it works great. I do not and will not use a Windows emulator on my Mac though. We already have to shell out $400 to get my DHs Mac fixed because he used a Windows emulator and it got a virus.

I use open office and really like it. Another that I know Lynnette uses is NeoOffice (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/neooffice.html) which I believe branched off from Open Office.

i got a mac in january, and it's been quite easy to transition. then again, i am used to macs because it's what i use at school.

as far as word processing, i got iWork when i bought my mac. it does what i need it to. i still have a pc laptop, so if i absolutely need to use word, i go on there.

do you have a schoolage child or are you or dh in school/teach? You can get an education discount for CS5 it ends up being around 200 bucks.

Yeah, NeoOffice is the Mac-specific version of OpenOffice so it's more tightly integrated into the Mac OS than OpenOffice. I mostly use it as a substitute for Excel but in 3 years, I've never run into anything I needed Microsoft for. I've heard good things about iWork so I'd probably go with that over Microsoft anyway.

Meghan,

Does a first grader count?

Nettio- does your neosystem work just like excel? I'm an accountant and will be working from home two days and need excel. But I'll still have my HP laptop so worse comes to worse I can do that.

I use iWork and love it. Although, I don't use it nearly as often as I did when I was in the work force. But, when I need something, the iWork applications work great. You can open Word and Excel files in Pages and Numbers, and you can also save your files to be opened in Word and Excel.

I use iWork also and love it. :)

For your PS maybe you can get a cheap upgrade to CS5? I would contact Adobe and see what you can work out. If not.....I would try to find a way to get the Education edition. :)

Pretty much. I don't use it for anything too complicated, mostly just budgeting type stuff, but the good thing is it's free so you can always download and try it and if it doesn't meet your needs, you could purchase something else. It does allow you to open and save files as Excel files which is nice.

Another great thing about the Mac is the search feature. I use it all the time to find elements I need. PSE took me some getting used to once I switched, but I don't know if the changes were because I went to a Mac or because I had to upgrade. My workflow isn't as smooth as it used to be, but I do love my Mac now.

I was hesitant to make the change...but I adore my Mac! Life seems so much easier. lol I did purchase cs5 for the Mac with the education discount by taking a continuing education class at a local community college.

FYI - we bought iWork, but I really only use the word processing part. My husband, who is an engineer, is not a fan of its spreadsheet, he much prefers Excel.
