Help, pleasee

My husband's desktop HD died... in other words he lost his work stuff(not really that big of a deal) & he lost the Itunes movie library. Have you ladies/gentleman had any luck with any software that may pull video files off of a hard drive after its crash. When we plug it in, in my external case it wants me to reformat it. I have Not done this as I'm hoping to retrieve data. The Korean shops here want 600-2k$ to try and see if they can get anything off of it. I'm not that rich. :(

I use CCleaner all the time and was told about it by someone on this board so I figure its a good program the recovery program probably is too
