Ok I need some help here - I have the kindle app on my itouch and android phone and love it! So on the fence about getting an actual kindle or maybe the nook. Do any of you have one and what are your thoughts on it?

I absolutely love my Kindle (named it Rex LOL). But, I use Amazon all the time so it was a better fit for me than Nook.
I have a Kindle and I absolutely adore it. The only thing I would like is for it to have a backlight, but I've read that that would affect the anti-glare screen??
I really really love it though!

It just boils down to which one you like! Kinda like the coke vs. pepsi debate.

if you like the read in the sun/outdoors id stick to a kindle since it reads like a book..the nook is hard to read outdoors with glare

I don't have a Nook to compare but I love my Kindle!! :) I love the fact it hasn't got a light so doesn't hurt my eyes which means I can read for longer!

I am in the kindle camp. :) I love mine. I actually love it because it does NOT have a backlight. It makes it easier on the eyes. I am on the computer most of the day so having a break from that really helps me relax while I am reading. If I need a light (like for reading in bed) then I just use a book light. LOVE IT.

Not the regular Nook. The Nook Color yes but just the Nook has the same eink screen as the Kindle. I read mine outside everyday and at the pool and beach.
eta: Nook has eink screen Nook Color has backlight screen

My hubby adores his Kindle... and this from a person who puts reading a book in the same camp as having a root canal... He has the app on his Droid and reads that when he is at work during lunch or when he travels... and the kindle at night before bed.
I'm still old school - I need to have the book in my hands... ;) He keeps asking me if I want a kindle... maybe someday...

I love my Kindle. I like the no backlit screen. It is much easier on my eyes. and if you already have books purchased for the app, they will transfer to the kindle.

I just bought the new touch screen nook with eink (not the backlit one.) i chose it because i can download books from my library for free. i could have gone either way! you can use calibri (free software) to change the format of your kindle books to nook and vice versa. but the library books are encrypted so you can't change the format.

I saw on the Amazon website that they will also be renting library books but no eta on that.
Those of you who have a kindle - do you really need the 3g or do you find the wifi is adequate for your needs? Also they have that special with ads - do any of you have that and does it take away from your reading?

I don't have 3G and the wifi is just what I needed. I don't travel a lot but even if I did I think I'd still get the wifi-only..I have tons of unread books on my kindle so if I don't ever think I'd be in a pinch to download kwim?
Mine doesn't have ads but from what I understand they only show up on the screensaver (i think) which wouldn't bother me at all.

I have the Kindle - wifi only and LOVE it! I can't vouch for the Nook but I don't think that you could go wrong either way. I think it would more depend on where you prefer to shop for your books.

most of the kindle books I've bought on amazon I can't convert so I'd be hesitant to buy nook books and try it. I can convert PDFs and epubs though

I have the first generation Nook and I love it! I read on it every single night. There wasnt a particular reason why I chose the Nook over the Kindle...I just chose it because my mom had a Nook and she loved it so thats what I went with.

I bought the one with ads for my parents(I thought the 'special' meant that it had extras--lame of me, I know). I was worried about the ads, but it is not a problem at all. They are not obtrusive or distracting.

I've been really debating this too and I'm pretty sure I'm going for a Kindle since I already have sooo many books and Kindle says they will be adding the library feature. Right now I'm still reading on my ipod Touch. I love the tiny size and the touch screen to turn pages. How do you turn pages on the regular Kindle? I wonder if I'd miss the ipod if I got a regular Kindle. Wish I could try one out for a while.

there's a button on the side to change pages. I don't miss the touch screen of my iphone/kindle and my regular kindle
They have them at Target and Best Buy if you wanna try one before buying it

I went with Kindle because someone mentioned that bookstores are going out of business quickly, and the Nook is by B&N. If B&N goes under, I'm just concerned that it will be hard to get new content. Silly, I know, but that's what decided me.
My son got his kindle a few weeks ago and he loves it. Reads constantly, and he's reading old classics like "Walden" and "The Scarlet Letter." I get mine in a few weeks. Can't wait... already have book bought, ready to be downloaded. We actually share an amazon account (because I'm not giving my teen an individual Amazon account) so we'll be able to share books, too.

three of us in my family have Kindle's. We love them, but we've never had Nook's here.
I'm thinking of getting myself an iPad, but I don't think I'll use it for reading much. My sister uses her iPad now and doesn't use her Kindle anymore.

We love nooks- the ability to borrow books from the library was one of the reasons we bought one for my mother-in-law and the ability to side load journal articles and other ePub and PDF files that we did not purchase from barnes and noble was the reason I got mine. I would not worry about barnes and noble going out of business as a reason not to buy from them: the nooks read ePub and PDF files directly, unlike the kindle which has a proprietary book format. I also sync my nook to my iPad, so that I can switch back and forth between the devices.

I love my nook (just the plain jane wifi one with the ink screen). The biggest reason I chose it (at the time) was price, but I think they are really close in price now. I also love sitting in Barnes and noble and reading on my nook...and nook discounts at the starbucks in store. :) I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I agree it's coke or pepsi. I got the Nook because of the library books -- I've read most of my books for free that way.

thanks everyone for your input - I have the kindle app on my itouch, xoom and phone so I have quite a few books on my amazon account so more than likely will go with the kindle. :)

I have a color Nook and LOVE it!!! We're getting ready to go on vacation and it's all loaded with library books (found an online converter that takes the 14 day restriction off) and movies to watch on the plane. :) Love that I was able to scan in directions and save as a PDF to get us to the hotel in Whistler since I won't have data on my phone in Canada.
I even downloaded some Alaska/Canada tour books to have with us on the trip (love that I don't have to worry about losing a library book!).
My mom also has a color Nook and my DD (12) has the regular Nook (not backlit). They both use theirs daily and love them. We all use the library to get books. My mom also buys hers from B&N and gets the free Friday books from B&N. My only gripe is that I found a book series I'm in love with and I can't find ebooks for all the books in the series, but I'm sure that will be rectified over time. I usually read inside, but on this trip I might be able to read outside - so I made sure to pack some non-polarized sun glasses to make it easier.
