View Full Version : Oh FB - how I hate you.

I think the idea of G+ really scared them, and they've just made it all worse. I think I'm going to go hide in G+ forever.

Annoyed yes. Not switching to Google + thought because 1) they'll probably change things often as well being a start up and 2) Darcy is the only person who routinely posts over there. Love ya Darcy, but I need a little more interaction than that.
Already having a bad day. Facebook is just another heap on the pile of annoyance.
I usually go with the flow with FB changes, but this one really annoys me. I guess it's just what I need to spend less time there.

I very much hoped they might add an Edit button to FB since G+ has it, but nope. They try to compete by making it worse. Great thinking. They can be happy that most people are lazy to switch.

Honestly - there have been little to no changes to G+ since it started. It's not as ingrained with advertising the way FB is, and have left it alone, for the most part. That's what makes it so awesome! (and no advertising! WOOT)

OK FB looks the same to me, what changed?
Darcy Baldwin
09-21-2011, 08:16 AM
Alisa - it might depend where you live. I can't remember if you're not in the States now, but it hasn't rolled through everywhere, yet. Not all of my UK friends can see the updates, but some can. It's weird.
It may also depend on what language you have your set at, too.

I've been fine with FB changes up until now, with no complains really, but this seems like a really drastic change.

It totally depends on language settings. I switched between US and UK English and there's no change for UK English. Not yet, that is.

It works for me. However, I'm not in the US, so I guess that's why it's different for me. I was surprised that all it took for the changes to show was to switch the language, because I thought if I'm outside US they won't show at all.

You know, if FB could actually TELL what stories I'm actually INTERESTED in...you know, if a computer could see into my heart and all, I wouldn't mind it giving me my top stories. Or how about just LETTING ME ELIMINATE PROFILE PHOTO UPDATES. Because those annoy the fool out of me.
But I read an article once where the powers that be at FB said that people totally freaked out when they went to having a news feed. Before, you had to go to someone's page to see their status updates/photos, but obviously that was a good change. So I'm sure they think that we don't know squat and will get over it and they can do whatever they want.
I'm just sayin', if what I WANTED was what Google+ was offering, I'd just go there. No need to turn FB into something I don't even want.
And I love what Kim said.

The changes FB made have nothing to do with what G+ offers. G+ doesn't choose what you see in your stream.

Being able to subscribe to someone, that's totally like G+. And creating all these lists, that's pretty similar to the circles in G+.

There's already a function in FB to create "circles" (it's called groups I think), but it's you who create them, not the system. Whatever. I'm not hired by G+ to defend it, it's just I find FB is a bad service. I just use it because most people I know use it. *shrugs*

LOL it's not THAT big of a deal and you can still see your most recent stories:
We've combined the Top News and Most Recent stories together in a single News Feed view.
If you see top stories first when you load your News Feed, simply scroll down to see the recent stories.
I don't mind FB changes, you people just like to complain :p hehe

Doesn't this happen every time Facebook makes changes? Everyone whines and complains about how much they hate it and it sucks and then two days later everyone is used to it. LOL
I'm not a big FB user to begin with so I don't really care, but as far as I can tell my account hasn't changed. I'm kind of sad now, I want to see what all the fuss is about. :D
OH, but I did think it was rather funny that when I went to Google just now, it drew a GIANT arrow pointing me to my G+ link in the corner of the navbar. Well played, Google, well played.

My top stories are from Saturday & Monday & my recent stories are totally random from anywhere from 5 minutes ago to 5 days ago. If that wasn't happening I'd be happy.
I did play with a it a bit and clicked on the little tab onthe left of the status, that makes it a top story, if you click it takes it off the top stories & says it won't put stories like that in your top story feed.
So I clicked on every last one of them a few hours ago & that seems to help.
On the plus side, right clicking up in the corner of updates gives you an option to change what you see from the poster & you can unsubscribe to them sharing links, photos, comments & I think profile photo changes & change how many of their update you see. Tedious to go through but 30 minutes work cleared up a lot of things from my feed.

LOL I'm one of the few who hasn't noticed any changes either, but then I've never used the top news or most recent or whatever they call that feed. I've always created lists (I have one for family, one for church friends, one for high school friends, etc). So, when I look at fb, I always just go down my lists and see those updates that I want to.
I kept trying to poke around fb this morning to see what all the tizzy is about, but I really don't see it.

I changed my language from English UK to English US so I could see what the changes were lol. They don't bother me really, I think I'm one of the few who like whatever they do as there's no point complaining as they don't listen. I usually use FB iPhone more anyway and that doesn't look too different, at least I don't think it does.

Yes this. My "top stories" are from days ago! And no way. I don't have time to go through every post and change whatever to whatever.
This is the first change I've complained about, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I have never heard of G+ until today. Of course, I'm the one who was using the same version of Paint Shop Pro that Christopher Columbus used to decorate his maps of the New World.

I don't mind the new look because I used a method similar to what Libby does. The change in the friend's list that happened over the weekend put me in a tizzy because I couldn't figure out how to change the privacy settings per each list. I think I have it figured out now. I think.

However, before that a friend of mine posted this and it gave me laugh--and put things in perspective.

This.
FB has had lists for a long time, before G+ and Circles.
You can get a reverse chronological list by simply creating a new custom list and dropping all your friends into it and setting that list to receive all updates, though if you're like me, you'll turn off Game Updates. I like this. And I like being able to separate everyone and everything into thematic groups. Just like I like organizing all my scrapbooking papers and elements. LOL!
You can also create Custom Lists for pages. So if you want all the page updates from SSD in one place, like Traci, KCB, Fee, Darcy, Penny, etc., you can do that too. Very handy on Thursday night and on Friday when everyone is having "win it before you can buy it" announcements.
The stuff that shows up in the ticker on the side is stuff that always showed up on your friends' walls anyway. It only shows up if your friends' friend has their security set to "Public" or "Friends of Friends." So set yourself to "Friends Only."
You can tell FB that they have no clue about what you consider Top News by clicking on the triangle in stories that appear as Top Stories. Yes, they have an algorithm, but you can tweak it like you do on Pandora.
