so after many days I think lucas has finally decided on his costume - he wants to be a robot. we have searched many places for DIY stuff and so far have tons of good ideas! I think it will be fun to do. Have any of you had your kids dress up like a robot? My only concern really is comfort. Most use cardboard boxes which is fine but I do worry about whether it is going to bug him or become uncomfortable. It isn't really all that practical for school either.

Yep, Nicholas is going to be a robot this year. I ordered a hat off of etsy that is robot and I bought a sweatsuit and I am going to sew felt pieces and buttons on it. Comfy, reusable and still a robot.

My son was a robot 2 years ago, and he had a heck of a time trick or treating in that thing! It wasn't at all comfortable for him, he couldn't move his arms... but he was in a cardboard box.. I like Mari's sweatsuit idea better, much more comfy and moveable!

But anyways, I took painted soda bottle caps for decorations. We also attached long glow sticks on there for "fuses" :) and I drew some meters and things on felt and cardstock and stuck them to the box. He had dryer vent tubes over his arms and legs.

thanks for this girls! yea I don't think cardboard box would be very practical! I'm thinking sweatsuit too.. thinkning that what i might do is sorta make a little i'm not even sure what the word is like take two cookie sheets and sorta make an apron out of it that has the robot decorations on it? maybe? LOL

My son was a robot when he was in preschool. He really liked his costume and had lots of fun that day (and the many days that followed) but yes he was a bit uncomfortable wearing it (you tell by the picture below). I think what most bothered me about the whole thing is how the preschool teachers criticized moms that make costumes for their kids instead of just buying them, right in front of my face! Anyway, this is what he looked like. I got everything from the hardware store in town, including the free boxes. It was reeeeaally cheap to make so that was awesome! :)

That's awful! The year I made the mario costumes, we got soooo much praise! They were WAY cuter than if we'd bought the ugly store one.

That is terrible, Yari. I always think the store bought ones, unless you spend a ton look kinda cheap. I like making the costumes.

That's because no one best mess with Traci!!! LOL! Just kidding. But I totally remember those costumes you made and they were totally cute. These ladies were kind of talking about why make them when you can just buy them, and I was like, "um, because I enjoy it." LOL

Oh totally! Like, seriously? $30 for a costume (made with really cheap fabric and sewing mind you)? Seriously?

I can't believe parents would do that.. I always feel like i'm being a "bad mom" by NOT making the costumes. Maybe because growing up my mom always put time into making something special for me?

I went and bought some tinfoil baking stuff yesterday.. hahah

This is what I'm going to go from:

I think it would be neat if i could find some battery operated christmas lights maybe to put into the costume? Is that a fire hazard?? LOL

Oh wow that is a super cute idea Kristin! And about the Christmas lights, it can't be any worse than this right? lol:

haha yes probably so!

the only thing i'm worried about with the costume is the clinging of the pans with my noise sensitivities... hopefully it doesn't drive me crazy.

Oh you're right. That may be a somewhat loud. What if you put felt in between the parts so that when they hit against each other, it's much quieter? that might diffuse the noise.

What a bizarre attitude.

I don't have kids, but if I had, I would feel the same! It was different when I was a kid - my Mum was absolutely not into crafts and my carnival costumes were always done by somebody else (nobody bought them, we lived in Communism, hah, not much choice in shops really) and I think other Mums looked down on her because of that. Sometimes I'm tired by the need that the human beings display for looking down at somebody (and for showing off)... For doing crafts, for not doing crafts, for having kids, for not having kids, for not having a career, for having a career, for the kind of career you have... The possibilities are endless and they are also eagerly exploited.

the lights all lit up - we had them on blinking so thats why one shows that its out. they were just press on lights that turn on when you press them so that was the best thing! it looked soo fun in the dark :)

I just wanted to share what our end costume result was! He won a costume contest in his age category so that was pretty fun, we made him a little remote control thing and that was probably his favorite part of the whole costume. We did it with cardboard but made it sort of like an apron that hung on him so that he wasn't confined with his arms in a box :)

Totally late on this, but...... Wes was Wall-E a few years ago and made his own costume from a cardboard box. I helped by printing out the words with a Wall-E-like font, etc. It was cute.

He was also a robot this year. But I bought it for like $12.98 from Walmart . com. Definitely the way to go for us!! :)
