So I finally ordered a 35mm lens for my camera and yesterday I was going a little photo happy (OMG, it's SUCH a nice lens for in my house, much easier to maneuver than my 50mm lens) - well, we set up a little "fake bed" in our living room to watch a movie since it was so cold outside, and my 3 year old was laying there. I laid his brother (4 months) next to him for a photo and when I was done I picked him up and Ben (3yo) said "NO! I wanted to snuggle with him!":wub:
Of course, 2 seconds later he was like "Okay, I'm done!" but still...it was so sweet! :D

What kind of lens did you get that you like to use in the house? I need a better lens for inside. I always get yellowy, blurry photos in our house. I think it's all the CF bulbs we use.

Use a custom white balance or a preset for indoor light to reduce the yellow look. And make sure you have a fast enough shutter speed for kiddos (160 if pretty still and 200+ if they are moving). Most blur is motion blur due to too slow of shutter speed. Up your ISO if you can, noise is better than motion blur! Unless you are going for motion blur.
She got a 35mm 1.8 lens. Others also like the Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens for indoors. You really need the wider angle on the crop cameras. I'm trying to sell my 50mm 1.8 right now because of that. I want more than just head shots!
Super cute! Love my 35 mm. :)

I would keep your 50mm to have the options! :) I can't remember where it was I saw it but there was a great article with pics for examples that show how a 35mm for portraits really can distort a face compared to something closer.

True but I have a 17-55mm 2.8 lens that is super sharp at 2.8 so I can use that for the 50mm range. I got the 50mm one first and then later upgraded my "zooms". I still want one prime, but more for inside low-light, which a 30 or 35mm one would work better for.
And for the distortion, yes you will get it if you are close up, but with today's huge megapixel cameras we can take a step back, shoot and then crop in photoshop to get a headshot as well without distortion. Its only if you are filling the frame (distortion happens around the edges). So don't despair if you only have a 35mm. Step back and crop!

I actually got the 35mm really cheap refurbished from Nikon - it was like $160 I think, which is the lowest I have seen it! Would have LOVED to get the 30mm 1.4 but couldn't justify the extra cost to my hubby, not when I am pining for a D90/D7000! So I'm just getting my "bargain basement" lenses until we have a new camera, and then start saving pennies for more glass! :) :)
I must say though, compared to my 50mm/1.8, this baby is SOOOOO quiet! I'm loving it, so far, gives me just the extra wiggle room that I need to shoot my inside pics.

Such a precious photo, Sara! I struggle using my 50 indoors too, so this post has given me something to think about...

Yeah that is why I mentioned the Sigma 1.4. It is no where the $1400 the Nikon version is, but gets RAVE reviews from people. Only problem (maybe) is that it is for crop sensors (which the D90 and D7000 are). But the regular 1.8 one is good too. I just want something a little more open than that for lowest of the light conditions. Course then focusing is an issue (autofocus has a hard time seeing contrast) but that is a whole 'nother story!
But yay for the 35mm lenses!!! Wish I had heard about them 4 years ago instead of the nifty fifty!
And adorable shot, love the made-up bed!
