Take my Rebel w/ my kit lens instead of lugging my 7d w/ my 24-70mm 2.8L. That thing is so heavy.
The last time we went I took the Rebel w/ that lens, I was worried about it all day. I think I'd have a better time with the smaller camera. And I'd get great pictures.
Tell me I'm not crazy for doing this!

Not crazy IMHO. I never take a big camera to DW - I bring my bridge Olympus and call it good. Like you said, you want to enjoy your trip but still get photos and not worry about lugging all kinds of equipment around. Photos are great, but you want this to be a trip you remember in your heart too :)

This is such a special trip....you might want to take the 7D withthe big lens!!! Maybe lug it around for 1/2 day and then drop it back at the hotel for the rest of the day.
Have fun!! I can't wait to see your pix!

We actually bought a 7D for the trip and DH lugged it everywhere except the days when it rained. Those days, we used my purse p&s. :)

I'd just take a P&S and call it good! Enjoy the trip and worry less about the equipment!

if it were me - I'd lug the one around that is the lightest and didn't care as much if it got bumped around... ;)

I am one that would take the 7D :) but I also took a little P&S when we went.... so I took my bigger DSLR when I knew we were gonna be doing something special {character meals, going to a show, etc} and then any other time I left it locked in the safe in my room and just took my P&S :)

My p&s takes terrible photos.
But the rebel I'd feel like I'm in the middle. I'm going to play with it some to get use to it again before we go. I love my 7d, but I think I'll be more stressed with it.

I would take the p&S. I also preordered the CD of photos and had the photopass photogs take pics. Be part of the fun on this one and enjoy every moment.
ETA: just saw your last post. Then take the Rebel. Don't take one that is going to have you stressed all of the time.

Yeah, we get the photopass for free.

I got a p&s that took good pics and left my Rebel at home. I did get the Photopass, so the pro photographers took some family shots which was great because then I was in the pics too!

I consider my Rebel to be my "big" camera, lol. I am usually fine with the quality of a P&S for that type of venue. My camera bag is a backpack, so it's gotten a lot more functional for me to carry my gear.

Take your Rebel. I booked our cruise last week and have been trying to decide if I should take my Rebel of my MKII... I think I'm going to take both, but only take the Rebel off the ship...
And yes, a Rebel is a "little" camera when you compare it to the bigger "pro" cameras. I think my Rebel weighs half that of my 5D... especially since I'm used to lugging the bigger one around.

I only took a P&S and got the photopass...there's some FAB pics on the photopass and some great shots with the P&S..honestly I'd leave the Rebel at home and just enjoy the trip :) Take advantage of the photopass folks :) You can also have the photopass folks take pics with your camera so you can be in them!

Yeah, if you compare the Rebel w/ Kit lens compared to the 7D or 5D with heavy lens, its amazing the difference.
I honestly think the only thing I'd miss in the higher ISO range I can get w/ the 7D.

I would probably take both and only take the 7d when you want the really good photos (although I think you would do fine with the Rebel alone)

I took my Rebel with me to DW and didn't regret it at all. My P&S took crappy pictures and I got so many great shots with my Rebel. There were only a few occasions where I wish I had my longer lense but it wasnt that big of a deal. I was able to get so many MORE pictures than the photopass people did so I was glad I had my Rebel.

Do you have a prime lens? I'd take like a 30mm or so lens and the Rebel. Problem with the Rebel is the higher ISO handling and that coupled with a kit lens and variable app, you are going to not be happy with the noise inside. And there are lots of inside shots (waiting in line etc). Its hard to go backwards!
I took my Nikon D7000 and my "kit-type lens" (Tamron 28-300 f3-6) and it was frustrating sometimes with the variable app and all, and the 7000 handles noise fairly well, so it would have irked me to use my old D90 with that lens (similar situation I think to what you are imagining). Good luck, this is the eternal question for all us photographer moms!!! Quality time and comfort vs quality shots. In the end what are you really going to do with them though...probably make a photobook, so they can be a little less than stellar right?!!! That is what I told myself!

I would NEVER just take my P&S somewhere awesome like DW. I took it to the beach yesterday instead of my dSLR, and I was SO SO SO disappointed in most of the pictures. I agree that the REbel will be a good compromise.
