Okay, when I woke up this morning, a knife block/set of knives wasn't even on my radar. And then I saw a blog post about a good deal on a set of knives with a block and I wanted it. But then my husband decided he'd rather pay a little more for a quality set of knives (but not the Williams Sonoma $2,000 knives or anything...like anything under $150).
So...does anyone have any good experiences with knife sets? Brands that you'd recommend? Now that I am thinking about it, I NEED them right now (doesn't help that we're remodeling our kitchen & I want new stuff to go with it!!) but we've never shopped for knives.
Thank you for enduring this incredibly random post.

we have really nice Henckels knife set. I love it and would get it over again. http://www.amazon.com/Henckels-International-15707-000-Synergy-17-Piece/dp/B000FA9204/ref=sr_1_3?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1330309694&sr=1-3
That one is very similar to ours.

wow that is random. Nornally we just get our knives at Walmart LOL. I bought a Forever Sharp set (which FYI does not stay sharp long). Aside from that I have no experience with knives!

Pre-kids we had a knife block, and I think we kept it out until my oldest hit about 12-18 months and became able to climb well. Now that we can't have sharp knives sitting out on the counter, the block sits empty in a storage area and the knives are on a high shelf in the cabinet. So if it were me, I'd get the nice knives and skip the block.

I have a set of Chefmate knives in a block that we registered for when we got married. That set has held up fairly well, although it is lacking in many ways. Since that time I've gotten more serious about cooking. I now own many knives from Cutco. I am a very happy Cutco customer. They are super sharp (my poor fingers have been a testament to that) and they're manufactured in my hometown... so I'm loyal. Aside from the standard knives I highly suggest their super shears, peeler, pizza cutter, and the cheese knife is incredible... I use it for everything. Also, for a lifetime you can mail your knives back and they will sharpen them for free and send them back to you. :)
I also own THIS (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60149324/) chef's knife from IKEA and it is excellent!!! Sharp after 2 years... which is awesome for $14 bucks. If I didn't already have so many knives, I'd buy more from IKEA.

Ooh, I had forgotten about Cutco. I'll have to look into that more closely. Thanks for the link, Jen - it's so hard to know without someone having personal experience. Our current set is lacking so I am excited to find something better. :)
And Rachel I hadn't even considered that aspect - we are blessed in that our 3 year old doesn't really climb and has never explored our countertops...but I'm not sure we'll get that lucky twice!

Last year we finally got some nice Wustoff knives. They are WAY better than cheap knives but not exactly something fun to spend your money on!

Our favorite knives are Global knives

Dh was a chef and he really loves these knives.
We also keep several paring knives. I like These

We also have been happy with victorinox paring knives.
I got a couple of good knives from Tupperware, actually. I am sure they arent exactly "pro", but they work great!
