Has anyone ever done one?
My parents will have their 50th wedding anniversary next year and I want to create one for them. I have no idea where to start other than going through the thousands and thousands of pictures that my Mom has for the photos. :p

I have with two of the boys. I did a pregnancy/first year video montage. I used One True Media. I LOVED it! That reminds me that I still need to do one for Derek!!!! I will tell you that I have cried my eyes out every time I have watched it. We all get choked up since I went through so much while pregnant (shots, bedrest followed with premature babies).
I highly recommend ONE TRUE MEDIA
i've done a couple - one was using ProShow Gold and I forget what I used for the other.
Download a trial of whatever you want to try, and play with the software to see if its comfortable for you. I bet most of them have trial versions.

The ones I've done I've used Microsoft PhotoStory. It's a free download from the MS website and is super fast and easy to use and I've been pleased with it.
I do them in iPhoto. Easy peasy.

There are lots of free ways to do it....
But, I use one that costs $ Pinnacle Studio HD (http://www.avid.com/US/products/family/Studio) (now called AVID), I like it because I usually have to add video clips into my slide shows. It is a RAM hog, but no more than PSCS. It lets you save in a bijillion formats, which I like. :)

I did one in Aperture and it was way easy. I imagine if you have Lightroom, you could use the slideshow tool for one too.

Yeah - I guess once I dump iPhoto (which will be relatively soon), I'll be doing them in Aperture, too. :)

I have used iMovie. It was pretty easy and I loved how you can do voice overs, add music, and special effects. Good luck with your project:)

I used to make them through Costco online. I don't see them on there anymore but it looks like you can go directly to the DVD website: http://www.avincistudio.com/.
I've made a number of them as gifts and have been happy with the results.
