mom VS. mum

I need some help from those of you that use "Mum" instead of "Mom"

mom = mum
mommy = mummy??
mother = ?
what about words like motherhood, motherly, etc
any other "mom" words I should be aware of? lol

I don't use it but my mom and her siblings called my grandmother "Ma" and my boys called me Mama until last year SOB!

Mum and Mummy are really all that is different... for Aussies anyway. I don't know if any others use it really. It's mainly a linguistic thing... we have a different accent, so we don't say Mom with the drawn out 'o' and we spell it how we say it ;)

It is interesting how different families use different special names! My girls use Mommy or Mama for me. I actually like Mama better... I think it has to do with their attitude at the time. Happy/loving they use Mama. hehe

Yep those are the ones I get :) It was mama from the beginning which is weird cause i always hated hearing that but when my kids called me that *melt my heart* lately its been more mom or mommy and mommmmeeee rofl

I never understood why my parents and grandparents called eachother "mother" and "father" or "mommy" and "daddy"...now I do! My kids also picked up on us calling eachother by our names and call us that sometimes. But they generally get in trouble for it, lol...

ok funny story...we were at home depot awhile back and I was trying to get DH's attn so I was going "hey honey" and hoping he'd look..well i kept saying it, alternating with his name and he was just lost in his big boy toys. Anyways Cam YELLS out HEYYY HONNNNEY and he turns (figures)..i was totally embarrassed but it was funny too...

Sometimes if DH is downstairs and 3yr old is coming up to bed she'll bring me something from him and say Dad says here babe...heh the things kids say

Normally though I'm mama..or Mommy..my oldest is getting in the just Mom stage..lol she's too old to be sweet to me now (wahh)

i'm in the Aussie Mum boat but i believe the English girls use Mum as well - at least i gather that from Kate Hadfield's blog lol

I'm in Canada, and I find that a lot of us use mum too, especially in Ontario. It's funny because I did pick that up from being up there each summer, I say to the kids at skating "don't forget to tell your mum you need...." but my own kids call me mom.

Rae calls Tony by his first name all the time, heard me say it I suppose. Good thing she repeats that, and not what I call him when he can't hear me hahahaha!

My kids are half british, so they call me mummy when they are speaking in English (and Mamma in Norwegian). In Britain they use mum, mummy or mother. My oldest went through a phase of calling me mum, I didn't like it at all - but she has stopped now. Although I think when they are older they will start to use mum, it seems like it's mostly young children (or very rich people) using mummy.
