Ok so I went to a wedding last year but I was mostly taking photos and I wore black dress pants and a nice top :)

This one is a lil more uppity. What colors are ok to wear? :o

I ask b/c I honestly don't know and don't want to look like a derp! I won't be taking photos I'll be a guest ;)

Help a chica out please...

Oh and as far as colors go, pretty much anything is ok except white.

I agree with Misty that usually pretty much anything goes as far as color wise :)

I was told it depends on the season... spring- lighter colors, summer- brighter colors, fall- more muted colors, winter- jewel tones. And to avoid all black or all white.

My sister worked in a wedding shop and she said the mother of the bride and mother of the groom should avoid black. Otherwise black is ok. But I agree with what Brittney said. My daughter had a winter wedding and had lime green and aqua as her wedding colors so it was next to impossible to find a dress in anything near those colors when I went shopping and I ended up with a marooned color last minute (literally a week from the wedding).

Some ideas:

I think the time of day and inside/outside is important too. If it's evening and inside, I would dress up more with something a little sparkly. Even a longer dress would be lovely. If it's outside in the summer I would choose a simple style short cocktail dress (like with a fun flared skirt)! You don't want to overshadow the bride, so I would look for something with a tone downed print with a tasteful more conservative cut to the neckline.

You could add a little color without making it so bright! Like a deep purple or violet.

do you know the brides colors? Cause you could choose something in line with the color scheme but maybe add a black skirt?

Also I think it depends on whether you are related so would you be in photos with the bride/groom or is it not a family member?

Day time summer wedding - Really anything that isn't white, or overly formal/sparkly is fine. A cocktail dress, nice summer dress, pants suit, skirt/blouse combo are all acceptable. Wear what you are comfortable in.

I was always told that you shouldn't wear the 'colors of the wedding' unless your in the wedding party or are a very close family/friend of the bride/groom (like a sister, brother, grandma...). I don't know if this is true or not. I personally do as I want and I don't worry so much about 'rules', I figure so long as I show up in clothes, all is swell! LOL!

I don't think the color of your attire matters that much as long as you look classy. Just try to be commiserate with the formality of the occasion and you will be fine (i.e. don't dress casually to a formal occasion or vice versa).

Me, too. Not appropriate to me. Though if you don't know the colors and accidently get it, not a big deal.

Ohh I read this wrong - If you're a guest, I agree with the other ladies...wear something according to the season. I say as long as it looks nice and 'dressy' you should be fine. :)
