So do you have special plans to watch the opening ceremony tonight? It's been such a rough week for my emotions, that I am so ready to relax and watch something fun and different on TV.
I'm thinking we need to order dinner out! :)

We'll play a globe game while we watch, and the boys are going to create a Lego Olympics during the evening.

No special plans except to watch them :) I'll probably still be working and watching at the same time. Cheyanne is excited to watch them so she'll be planted on the couch.

I've got to take t-ball pictures right after it starts, so I have it DVRed for later. I will probably watch it during chat.
Just bathing the kids and getting them to bed, after that we're gonna open some beer and watch and watch and watch.
2 more hours until it starts :)
I'm going to put the kids to bed, grab my lappy, scrap, and watch! That's pretty much where I'll be for the entirety of the Olympics. I love it! :D

I'm looking forward to it but I know my husband's patience for them is limited. The China ones led to a major argument because frankly, even if they do get a bit tedious in parts, there is nothing else NEW on tv that we watch on opposite it and I can see that Big Bang Theory episode we've only seen a mere 841 times in a few weeks when it cycles back around.
But he'd rather watch the rerun & swears he'll switch back when the ceremonies 'pick up'. Unless of course it's an episode 'he really loves'.
I'm keeping control of the remote tonight

It's date night here...kids are staying at the Y until 10:30pm so I'm making a nice dinner and we'll either DVR the open ceremony and watch it when the kids get home and watch a movie instead. Or we'll say heck with it and watch the Opening Ceremony and probably fall asleep...such party animals at this house.

You are so creative! I like Darcy's Lego Olympics idea too. I'll have to see how in to the games the kids get. We'll probably be dragging out the bows and arrows once archery begins. :)

Some of it is weird even for us Brits but ......
the bit where they showed the olympic torch going around the UK - that was my bridge where the guy was abseiling off it :) I live near there :)

It started today, Juli :) They're just not televising today's ranking qualifiers :( I was sad about that. That's our focus sport this year...but we we won't get to see a ton of it.
Tracy - you can watch it online live, though it's just about over now.

Woohoo me too, I can just see it peeking through the buildings from my house lol! :)
I have to admit defeat now, I'm too tired to watch anymore!

I wasn't planning to, but after seeing this thread I told the kids about it and they all wanted to watch. I finally had to carry a protesting 3 year old to bed after an hour of it, and DS is still watching. I'll be rejoining him in a few minutes.

We didn't get too creative because I just thought of it today. I basically grabbed things that had almost zero prep and that the boys would eat. We had an olive tray, sushi, mini burritos, mini pizzas. Next time, I'll actually try to plan ahead!

I was not impressed with the show. But its hard to top Beijing from 4 years ago. I love the bit with the Queen and 007, the fireworks were amazing, and anytime I can see David Beckham is a good day. But man Paul McCartney was a yawner.

It's just ending here. I didn't end up watching the whole thing after all because DH and I were out looking for rental houses for Son #1. But we caught the parade of athletes, which I always enjoy. I was very disappointed that the final torch bearers were unknown young athletes. Very anti-climactic. :(
Sir Paul looks kind of frightening, but he IS old, so I give him a pass. Especially because who knows how I will look at that age. :p
I loved it. My most favorite parts of the show were 007 and the Queen and Mr.Bean.
I can totally understand that it wasn't for everybody and had to laugh when yesterday Andrea wrote that it was weird even for her as a Brit. :) I actually found it weird on some times, too, but I loved this weirdness. :)
I loved that it was something totally different from the big Chinese circus four years ago. Sure, the choreography and performing in Beijing was perfect and nice to watch, but to me, it was like a huge perfect machine, monstrosity without humanity. But it was actually totally fitting and okay - that represented Beijing and China. Sadly, would I add, but that's just me with the experiences from the totality system. Maybe that's why I actually liked the unleashed, free and quirky show in London more. And hey, Chinese communist leaders taking part versus the Brittish Queen? Incomparable.
I also loved the idea of the British sport hopes lighting the fire, although I get Mary's disappointment. But they were nominated by the sport legends. Watching Steve Redgrave running with the torch from the water to the stadium was great.
And I'm with Amber - David Beckham's face when he was riding that boot - aaah! :)
Not that I want to go too forward in time, but I think the Rio Opening Ceremony in 2016 will be for everyone :) (which is actually easy when you have material like samba, capoeira and beautiful people LOL).

I missed the end.. I have it on DVR so I'll finish it later today. The parade of nations was FAST... I couldn't believe how fast they were getting through it.

I went to bed when Sir Paul came on. :)
My fave bit was Rowan Atkinson (who I know better as Black Adder from the 80s, having never seen Mr Bean) I thought that part was great. I did appreciate the speed of getting everyone through the parade of nations. That part can really drag sometimes. I was getting a bit annoyed with the announcers though... did we really need to bring up Idi Amin? Really?
I kept hoping the TARDIS would materialize at the top of the tor & light the torch but I did love how they did it in the end.

I know. I really thought that there should have been a Tardis or police box somewhere. I think perhaps Queen Elizabeth isn't much of a Doctor Who fan. She's obviously a huge James Bond fan, though. She definitely loved her part in the opening ceremony. And I read today that those were definitely her own Corgis! LOL!
I loved Mr. Bean! Rowan Atkinson is hilarious! We loved him in Black Adder and the Thin Blue Line and of course, as Mr. Bean!
My kids loved J.K. Rowling!
