A tutorial on how to do a punch out on my layout? :o I thought I knew how to do it, but evidently NOT! :D
Thank you!

I don't think we have one here at SSD, but I found one here...

Thanks Traci - I'm trying what they say but getting nowhere  I use PSE 9 and I'm guessing the tut is not in PSE, though I don't see where it's mentioned what program they are using. I'm not getting the dancing dashes when I draw my shapes.:crying:

Marie, try to CTRL+click on the shape in the layers pallet. That should give you your marching ants. :)

In order to get the marching ants in PSE 10, I made sure my shape was a completely different color than anything on my layout, then used the magic wand tool and clicked the middle of the shape. That selects everything in that color on your LO. Then select the layer(s) in the layers palette that you are cutting from and click delete or Ctrl+X to "cut" the shape out. I hope that helps!!

Gah! I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but when I use CTRL and click on my layer no marching ants show up. As soon as I click the green check mark to commit my change my punch shape disappears and the magic wand trick doesn't bring it back either. I'm going to have to call it quits for tonight before I lose my temper - LOL. I've read 2 other tuts for PSE specifically and still it's not working.
Thanks for trying to help me though.

Oh, you have to "Simplify" the shape into it's own layer before you can select it with the magic wand. My PSE isn't open right now and I'm running out but I'll go through the motions when I get home and post step-by-steps here. :)

Does PSE have an option to add an Inner Shadow style to a layer? Because you can get a cutout effect using that too. That's how I did mine on my sample layout.

Pam - I tried to simplify the layer but when I right clicked on the layer that option wasn't highlighted. It was there but it wouldn't let me select that option.
Lynette - I have no idea! :D I will have to investigate that!

Hmmm.... Okay, I had it a little backwards. Here's what I did:
In PSE 10 it asks me if I want to simplify as soon as I try to select the shape with the magic wand tool. The shape becomes its own layer, I have it selected, I chose the paper layer in the layers palette, and then I can delete it and leave the cut out. Then delete the shape layer, shadow and go.
This is frustrating to me for you! I can't imagine PSE 9 and 10 would be so different!

I have PSE10 and this one worked for me: http://www.designhousedigital.com/content/classroom/tutorial-how-to-create-custom-punches/ Kind of different, but it was what I was looking for.

Make sure you are clicking on the thumbnail in the layers pallet, not the text part of the layer in the pallet...

When you do ctrl + click on the layer in the layer palette, are you clicking on the thumbnail or just the layer... because you have to click on the little thumbnail for it to select the shape and get your marching ants... not the whole layer.... it took me a long time to figure that out when I was first learning to do it

Aha!!! Why don't any of the tuts say that???!!!! :D I'll have to give that a try tomorrow morning. I'm off to bed to read for a while.

I know right? I asked the very same thing when I finally figured it out... They all say ctrl + layer lol

I'm using PSE 8 and I can't get those stupid little ants either! This is why my punchouts are always circles because I click the layer I want to punch, use the eraser tool, and add a shadow to the top layer. Those ants have alluded me for years :)

I used the inner shadow like Lynette suggested.... worked in PSE 10. Hope you get it figured out!
