I havent been talking a whole lot about what has been going on but he has been having a lot of breathing problems since the accident in July. Last month he finally got the referral to the pulmonologist and he was told he had 50% lung capacity and had a really bad infection. He was put on antibiotics, steroids, an inhaler and a nasal spray. One of those made him develop a really bad case of thrush so he stopped really eating and drinking for a couple days. I kept on him and he would drink a little here and there but not much and his breathing just kept getting worse. It was keeping both him and me up at night but he did not want to be in the hospital again. So I said ok we will call the lung dr and make another appt. Turns out he only had one appt approved by our insurance. So we had to wait for that to be cleared. It only took a day so it wasn't horrible. I was just thinking he would give him a stronger antibiotic and maybe some prescription strength cough syrup. No he gets to the office takes one listen to his lungs and tells us they are completely blocked the infection is a lot worse and says he wants him to head straight to the hospital. Again more "discussing" the stay at the hospital with him and he finally goes last night around 9PM. He has a private room which is good and a bed so I can stay with him at night but I need to get ahold of my sister and see if she will come and get my son.

Totally unrelated to all that coming home from the dr's yesterday to pick up our son from school we see someone has destroyed the cross we put up at the intersection for our son who was killed. Then we went to give our daughter some money to pay for a SUV so her and the baby have a safer vehicle to be in and find out the guy who we are buying it from was one of the guys who pulled my husband out of the vehicle...my daughter went to school with him since pre-k. And he could not believe my husband was still alive. He could not even look at me when he said he pulled him out but couldnt do anything for my son because he was so bad off. I spent most of the night crying. Matthews birthday is next Firday so it is already hard enough right now just getting through this month but this is making it a million times harder. So just say a prayer for my husband and for me if you could. It is getting really hard to just get up everyday and keep going forward right now.

I am at the hospital now. It looks like middle week release from what the dr said...at least that long. He said they still have no idea what is causing this but like I told him he has been hospitalized for different issues and been on antibiotics here in the hospital and at home several times and this has been going on since last October but he said well this is the first time I am personally seeing him so I have to start from the ground up. Frustrating because this hospital has all his previous stays on record and his dr is affiliated with this hospital and she has known about his lung issue since October 2011. He was released last year from the rehab at the end of August and his release papers said he had lung damage. I do not understand why his primary care dr would continue allowing this to fester and just give him oral antibiotics and not just send him to a lung dr or at the very least prescribe albuterol for him through a nebulizer.

Oh man, Jessica! Maybe it's a good thing he's starting over. It may be frustrating in the short term, but better in the long term...hopefully. I'm so sorry every step of the way seems so very hard. :( Bless you heart! You deserve some good news. Hopefully this doctor can give you some soon!

thanks everyone...he seems to be improving a little. The cough is still there pretty bad and especially when he is sleeping it just isnt sounding so great. They cant get his oxygen levels up past 96 yet even with the breathing treatments every 2 hours.

so some good news even though his condition has not improved...he does not have anything asbestos related which was one thing I was concerned about because he was exposed to that when he was a mechanic and a body tech when he would do brake jobs. Still no release date estimated. Not until he is stabilized and his bronchial spasms stop. He has been diagnosed so far with COPD and asthma. The drs just are not sure why he would have COPD when he has never smoked in his entire life. When he leaves the hospital they will be doing a new type of inhaler plus an albuterol inhaler and possibly breathing treatments with a nebulizer....we are not sure exactly yet. And of course add another dr to the drs he currently sees regularly.

Jessica, I'm so glad you finally got the appt you were after, and that the insurance co didn't fight with you on a second appt! I hope your husband gets better sooner than later. I think about both of you a lot.

I just got off the phone with my husband. The dr's do not know what to do. They said they cannot send him home until his lungs start to work properly. They increased the dosage on the steroids and breathing treatments to the max and they still are not working the way they should be. And apparently while he was asleep last night he pulled out his IV and the little patches for the heart monitor and threw them on the floor. He said he does not remember doing that at all. So they had to reinsert the IV and redo the patches on the heart monitor. He was planning on coming home today but it isn't looking like that is going to happen because they said he would have to be weaned off the steroids before they could send him home anyway. And they still do not have the results from the sputum culture. I just dont have any idea what is going on. I mean unless he is allergic to something they have given him which is why it is not responding and seems to get worse.
