haha... isn't that the way it always goes? Hopefully there is an instrument that kind of crosses over... At least John can teach Ryan about rhythm, reading notes, beats per measure, timing, etc... :)

I know several. Mine weren't interested at 8, but both started at 10 and are still playing (and loving it) at 12 and 14. I bet the violin would make a nice duet with one of the instruments your husband plays ;)

I was the only person in my family that ever played any kind of instruments...except for my great grandmother. I could read sheet music like a book. I played 6 instruments but now I barely play 1. Violin was never one I played. I started playing the harp at 8. Not because my parents forced me but because I wanted to. I LOVED playing the harp. Besides piano it was my favorite instrument to play.

One of my closest childhood friends has played violin since he was 6 and he's now 40 and still plays and loves it to relax. Both of his younger brothers also played, but only one continued into adulthood. Orchestras around the world are extremely male dominated, so a boy choosing the violin seems kinda natural for the music world. I hope whatever he chooses he enjoys for a long time.

which 8 does he play?

The ones he does best are:
Guitar
Bass
Piano
Cello

He also knows how to play:
Drums
Clarinet
Double bass
... and something else that I'm totally drawing a blank on at the moment.

He had piano and guitar lessons as a kid, played clarinet in middle school band, percussion for one year of high school and used that to teach himself drums. The rest he taught himself.

The violin is kind of similar to the cello so it's not like he wouldn't be able to help him out :) my sister plays the violin and wants a cello for Christmas!
