I am wanting to get a laptop with our tax refund so I can take my scrapbooking with me, as we travel a lot in summer. my husband mentioned to me last night that I might want to get an Apple. I don't know a thing about them (well, any computer for that matter. I am really dumb when it comes to computers). My question is -Why would I want an Apple. What is better about them than just a dell or compaq? Anyone with an Apple please help me. I definitly want to get the best one for me but I also don't want to go broke getting one. Thanks for any light you can shed on the subject!

Macs don't get viruses (I won't say NEVER, but it's VERY RARE that you will).

I have NEVER had an occasion to have to RESTART my Mac. No FREEZES!!!

It's very easy to use... Downloads and Fonts are SOOOO easy to install...

I adore mine. I have a MacBook Pro and we are looking into buying an iMac for a desktop later this year.

THUMBS UP FOR MAC!!!

I have a MacBook Pro and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I second everything that Tara said. I also really love the look and feel of the interface. When I go back to my husband's PC, I get a little cranky. lol The only downfall that I have found is that software and filters/actions aren't always Mac compatible - this comes up most often with free downloads.

Good luck with your decision!

I don't have a Mac (I want one :( ) but I think another reason to get one is that in the event something does go wrong with it you can bring it into the store to the "Genius Bar" to get real, in person, employee assistance. You don't get that with any other company (unless it's through Best Buy's "Geek Squad" or something but that's still not directly through the computer company like Mac does).

Also, Macs have some really neat iPhoto stuff that I believe comes with your computer.

I went to best buy Friday night and they have the whole mac setup now. I was looking at the macbook and I think this is the one I am going to get. What is the diffrence in this one and the macbook Pro. Also how does the whole downloading and unzipping of the files work on the mac? Thanks for the help
Oh one last thing will any External Hard Drive work with the mac or do you have to buy a certain kind to be compatiable? Thanks again ladies. I am so excited and can't wait to get mine!

The difference between the MacBook and MacBook Pro is pretty much the size. The MacBook only comes in a screen of 13", and I think the stuff inside isn't as powerful. The Pro you can get in 15" or 17" and is a bit more powerful, also upgradeable more than the MacBook. Also I think there are more USB connectors in the Pro (I think it's something like 4 instead of 2). The main reason I'm getting the Pro is the screen size, though.

And any EHD should work with them...at least if they use USB's to connect.

Also how does the whole downloading and unzipping of the files work on the mac?It just does. I click "download" and that's it. File unzipped, the zip file is tossed in the trash and the unzipped files are just there waiting for me in Downloads.

This is probably the best way to describe a Mac..."It just does". :p Seriously, once you start using your Mac and get used to the differences between a Mac and a Windows machine, you will see just how simple things run on a Mac. Overall, I find Macs to be more user-friendly.

I have a LaCie EHD and it works fine with my Mac. I am not really aware of a brand that you can't use. It will just be formatted to use with your Mac and you are good to go. I plan to get Time Capsule though so that I can have a wireless EHD!

I have an Apple iBook and LOVE it. I want to upgrade to a MacBook Pro one day but really, my 3 year old iBook works just fine. The only problem I had was caused by a bad stick of RAM. Otherwise, I haven't had any other issues with my Mac.

I don't have to deal with crazy viruses. I rarely reboot my Mac. I love the interface and love the iLife suite of programs that comes with it. Looking forward to being able to use Time Machine to backup all my stuff once I get a dedicated EHD for the backup.

I think if you can afford the Pro, it's definitely worth it. If you have an Apple Store or even a small store that specializes in them, it might be worth going in there to ask lots of questions and really compare all the models. Even if you end up buying somewhere else, it's nice to talk to someone who knows Macs and can give you a good overview.

I'm thinking about getting a Pro this year. We have an old 12 in PowerBook that I love for its portability, but it's supposed to be my husbands and he's strongly hinting he'd kind of like it back, lol. Anyway, it's a bit small for scrapping, plus it's quite old so not quite as beefed up as I'd like it to be. Mostly I work on an older 20inch iMac, which is awesome. I'm really drooling over the 24 inch though, and mine is pre-Intel, soooo, over the next year or so the plan is for hubby to get both of these and we'll get a 24in iMac and a MacBook Pro for me. Well, I hope that can be the plan!
