We think this year's challenges are simple and straightforward, but if you have questions, ask them here!

I'll try to update this post with questions and answers as they come in so we have a quick reference spot with all of the info you need on this year's newest challenge format!

The new challenge system is amazing! What a great overhaul and way to accommodate different preferences. I can't wait to get started on January. Thanks for all the hard work that went into it!

Sounds fun! Couple of questions:

Will there be a gallery just for the challenge LOs?

Do we post the bingo card in the monthly thread only by the end of the month once we've completed the challenges that we want to do, or do we post it as we go and add to it as we complete each challenge?

I clicked on the link to download the bingo card but all I get is a jpeg of it and no download... am I missing a link somewhere? I'm running on very little sleep this morning! LOL :D

You can Right click > Save As to save the bingo card to your computer.

I'm wondering what we put in the gallery? The same size as before? And then the Bingo card won't have links in it? Right?

That's right, Kristi. You still load your regular 700x700 in the gallery. The bingo card won't be linked. You'll just saved a flattened JPG of your card and post that in the monthly thread.

I'd say it's up to you whether you want to update a post with progress throughout the month or just wait until your card is complete. As long as your finished card (for whatever discount you're working toward) is posted by midnight on Feb 1, that's all we're looking for. If it were me, I'd probably post my card when I was finished completely just so that I'm not having to save it and update it several times throughout the month.

Good idea on the challenge gallery. I bet Robin can set that up for us. :)

Just added a challenge bingo gallery for you girls to share your layouts in!! So excited!

Libby is totally right, you're welcome to post your bingo cards as you make progress or you can hold off and post them by midnight on February 1st! Whatever is easiest for you!

So excited for our first Bingo with the Babes thread to roll out on Monday too - I cant wait for you to see their inspiration and share some of your own too!

Quick question - For the "A is for..." square, does it have to be A or is can it be whatever letter we want?

Quick question - For the "A is for..." square, does it have to be A or is can it be whatever letter we want?

Any letter you want is just fine. That definitely falls into the "as long as you scrap in the spirit of the challenge, you'll be fine" area! Have fun with these and get creative <3

Another Question: :)

"Zero Embellishments" - does that could paint & doodles? Or are embellishments chunky things like flowers, buttons, etc..

I've just scrapped a page meant to be for the 'this year I'm going to' prompt but I made a mistake so mine says 'this year I will' instead, will that count or should I go back and change it? :)

I'm shopping around for a simple digi-scrapping project to help me jump back into it. I used to scrap pages every week, but in the last couple of years I've focused on my photography and only scrapped a few pages each year! I really like this challenge format with all the prompts presented upfront and the flexibility of interpreting them our own ways.

The thing that keeps giving me pause when considering joining challenges, however, is that I don't think I have enough current product for any single digi-scrap store (because of my two year hiatus from scrapping) to make all my layouts using mostly appropriate products. I do have A LOT of kits though -- I started digi-scrapping in 2004 -- and not much in my budget for buying new stuff, so I'd like to use what I have.

I just searched my files for the designers' names listed in the store and do find I have several of them in my stash -- though mostly old and/or freebies.

To fulfill the "must use Sweet Shoppe products for the bulk" do the items have to be currently in the store or would it be okay to use items I have from current designers, even though it probably came from their previous stores or were freebies from months ago?

Would it be frowned upon if I start out participating with anything I currently have in my stash, knowing I don't qualify for the rewards, just to try this out and see if this is the project for me? Then in February I could start building a specifically Sweet Shoppe stash.

On another note, I understand all the prompts on the bingo card, except maybe one: spin-a-lift. Does that mean to scraplift a page of Alyson's, changing it to make it our own (putting our own spin on it)?

Finally, will the prompts change every month and repeats be moved around the bingo board?

Thank you!

p.s. By way of quick introduction, since I see I have never posted here before today, I don't remember what originally brought me here when I registered in June 2013 but today I came after reading Traci Reed's latest newsletter. :)

Another Question: :)

We actually think paint and doodles are embellishments. I'd say photo, text, papers would be fair game but otherwise, it's an embellishment.

Hi MIchele! Welcome to SSD! So glad you're getting back to digi!

To answer some of your questions...

Spin-a-lift is an old SSD challenge that we've done over the years. Basically, you choose a layout and then flip or rotate it and lift it from there!

Any products from current SSD designers is fine... including freebies, items you've picked up from their personal store, and retired items. As long as it's by a current designer, you're good!

You're also welcome to check out our free sample (https://www.sweetshoppedesigns.com/sweetshoppe/home.php?cat=723) section and use those things on your layouts. We just put 24 new free items up yesterday, so there are lots of fresh things there to play with, too!

And yes, we'll be putting up a new board each month! :)

Finally, I'd say that if you wanted to just try the challenges on your own using outside-of-SSD product (just to try out the system and knowing that it wouldn't count for rewards), you're welcome to do that. However, we do not have an "open" gallery, so that means, you have to use some SSD product on your page for it to be posted here.

I hope this info helps a little. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

If a particular challenge can be done in 1 or 2 pockets of a Project Life layout, is that enough? For example, things like scrapping a top 10 list or scrapping something trivial about yourself could easily be worked into a weekly or monthly layout. Obviously others might not be conducive to just a pocket; using an icy color scheme or no embellishments probably needs to apply to an entire page whether pocket or traditional.

Libby Pritchett
01-03-2015, 01:11 PM
for the no elements - if you clip a pocket card to a photo does that count as an element?

When we discussed this challenge behind the scenes, the general consensus was that the layouts should avoid anything that could be found in the elements folder in a kit. Since many kits contain pocket cards in the elements folder, I'd skip it just to be on the safe side. :)

To me it means that things don't have to be perfect to have worth or that you can look for the good in a less-than-ideal situation. I wonder if that fits with the "official" explanation.

I was thinking this too. But I think you could also interpret it in a 'fix-it-up' type of way. Like a broken car window that you put duct tape on to get it to the car shop. Or a half dented old farm car that still gets you around. I can think of lots of "I fixed it!" jobs by my kid or DH :). Or even an injury like a broken wrist and you still manage to cook dinner! LOL!

I am already really missing seeing the inspiration for each challenge separately. Would it be possible for each challenge on the bingo card to have a thread for general sharing? For instance, if I wanted to see how people were doing the 'no embellishments' challenge I could just click on that thread for inspiration.

Libby Pritchett

Spin-a-lift is an older SSD challenge. What that means is that you choose a layout from Aly's gallery (https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com/gallery/search.php?searchid=176274), and then you flip it or rotate it to a different direction before you scraplift it.

Does that make sense?

"use at least 4 3x4 pocket cards on a layout"

does that include ones you journal on, and is it ok if it's in a PL layout?

You bet! A pocket page would totally satisfy this challenge and if you arent a pocket scrapper, the challenge is in using at least 4 of them on a layout. Blanks that you journal on would certainly count!

Guess what! I just scrolled through my stash to see if I could find Sweet Shoppe kits I already have. I change my folder icons to kit previews so I can easily see what I have, and the Sweet Shoppe packaging is very easy to pick out from my stash too. I found I have several kits from the past few years from designers who are still here! I have last year's birthday collar too!

I also found I have two kits from Kristin Cronin-Barrow and Zoe Pearn that were monthly Premiere kits at DigitalScrapper. Would those count because the designers are here, or no because these two kits were sold elsewhere?

I'm going to get started on the Bingo challenge soon!

Script and Sans Serrif fonts...I can't find them in Photopshop. Are they under that name?

You can use any script font you like. Script fonts are anything swooshy and scripty...

http://www.dezineguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Buffet-Script-Fonts.jpg

Serif and San Serif are accents or the lack of those accents on fonts as seen below...

http://triggersandsparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/serifs_vs_sans.jpg

For this challenge, we want you to combine script with San Serif on your layout like seen below...

http://www.fontflavor.com/winnie/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/test-clean-summer-kiss.jpg

The fonts you choose are up to you!

The gallery requirements say that the layouts posted here must contain some SSD products, but there's no specific percentage. You can refer to the guideline below:

All products by current SSD designers are ok. :) Retired products, freebies, items that are for sale through guest spots, etc will all work. As long as the product is by a current SSD designer, you can use it, no matter where you got it.

Hope that helps!

I'm not the boss, but I don't see any problem with that. For putting the layout in your bingo card, just resize it so the longest size fits the square and center it in there. It shouldn't be an issue as long as the layout itself matches the challenge.

I thought so as well but it seems like bundles might be an exception from now to then. For example... when I received the -50% coupon for the shadowbox challenge I bouught a flergs collection for $5.77 wich is normaly priced $18.46 so I guess it was combined with the bundle discount that was already given. Not sure if this will be the case this time again.... Thanks for you reply tho!

For the pattern bingo level, if we scrap some pages that aren't in the pattern, should we leave them off our card to make it easier for y'all when you go through at verify them? So like, if I'm trying for the cover-all, but if that doesn't work out and I have a pattern instead, should I take off the ones that don't fit the pattern?

Thanks for your reply Robin but I was aiming at the bundle discounts, alot of stuff have like 20% off always when you buy the bundle (just to set an example). But I guess the coupon will work the same as the -50% one right?

It should. Some designers don't allow additional discounts on their bundles and some do, so you wont know until you try the coupon on the bundle.

Scrap Therapy would be using the page as therapy- whether it;s something bad or good, just getting your feelings out about it. I've done pages before on this topic where I just used a quote and a kit that fit my emotions, etc. to leave personal stuff off it.

Just checking what acrostic, scrap your stash and spin a lift mean?

breakingbrie
03-04-2015, 08:09 PM
An acrostic is a poem or other form of writing in which the first letter, syllable or word of each line, paragraph or other recurring feature in the text spells out a word or a message. - googled the other day, I didn't know either.

Spin a lift is where you pick the layout you like then scraplift the layout, but spin it clockwise or counter clockwise first.

Hope that helps! I'm unsure on the scrap your stash prompt!

Hi! I'm new to the forum, not the shop. I'm going to try your challenges for the first time this month, but first I have some questions. Thanks in advance for any help!

1.) I have a good amount of SSD items, both new and old. I understand that the goal is to use kits/templates that are currently in the store, and I will do so. However, are we allowed to, at times, use old/retired kits from current designers or a template from a designer I think is no longer here? (I have to double check that she's no longer here. I hope she is because I have a Lot of her templates.) If she is no longer here, I would assume (I know that is bad to do) that her template would just be considered an outside template.

2.) What does "spin-a-lift sugarbabe marnel" mean?

3.) What does "stack it up" exact mean?

guikrazy
07-07-2015, 09:16 PM
Ack! I just noticed that there isn't an edit button?! How am I going to live without an edit button? Lol! The OCD in me is going to HATE that!

I forgot to add another question.

4.) To we have to upload our layouts to the gallery and link to the products used in addition to putting the layouts on the Bingo card?

Omgosh! I'm So Sorry to post again in this thread. I just tried to post my general site question under a Sweet Little Community section, but it said that I don't have permission to do so. I don't know why.

Well, my question is about siggies. Are there any rules for them?

Libby Pritchett
07-07-2015, 09:39 PM
Hi there! So glad you're joining in with us!

We have some spam filters in place, so that's why thinks are a little wonky for you. I changed your permissions, so most things should work better for you now (I think you can start threads and edit them now). Things still may be a little weird til you reach 10 posts, but that'll clear up automatically. The quickest way to get to that magic number of 10 is just to leave some comments in the gallery. :)

To answer your questions:

1 - Anything from a current SSD designer is fair game. That includes freebies, retired items, or items that you got elsewhere. As long as she's a current designer, it counts. Items from designers who are no longer here just count as outside product.

The official rule states

You must use Sweet Shoppe products for the bulk of your page. Outside templates, minor accents, etc. are perfectly ok as long as at a glance the page is obviously created with products from our shoppe and designers!

So, the templates you mentioned should be just fine. :)

2 - Spin-a-lift of Sugarbabe Marnel: Spin-a-lift is an old SSD challenge. Basically, you look through Marnel's gallery (https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com/gallery/showgallery.php?ppuser=117&username=marnel) (she's a sugarbabe: the site creative team), and choose one of her layouts. Then you flip it or rotate it around someway and "scraplift" or use her design as inspiration for your own page.

3 - Stack It Up - This one sounds like it's pretty open to interpretation. I'd just take it to mean to do a page with things stacked up... maybe you have a stack of photos peeking out from behind a main photo. Or maybe you stack up some flowers/buttons/foliage on top of a photo... as long as you've got something stacked on the page, you'll be fine.

4 - You should definitely upload to the gallery, and while we love & appreciate links to the product, that part isn't really necessary. You can simply say "XYZ kit by Libby Pritchett" in your credits.

I hope I've answered everything for you, but if you have more questions, just holler!

Just a quick question. For "currently tending" can we scrap about some recent activity or do we have to do something that is a phase right now or popular right now? I wanted to scrap a recent outing but if that doesn't count I can pick something else.

I have no authority to answer your question, but since the challenges are open to interpretation, my plan is to scrap using a/some trendy patterns/shapes/etc. Like chevrons or ombre or something like that? Mostly posting this here so someone official can shoot down that idea if it's not kosher, lol. ;)

To play along, check out this month's Bingo card and start planning your strategy for earning the discount you want. Our Bingo challenges are designed to be fairly simple, straightforward and open to interpretation for the most part, so have fun with them! Remember, as long as you try to scrap in the spirit of the challenge as it's posted, you'll be just fine, but let us know if you have any questions!

It stated that the challenges are open to interpretatio, so for trending now, we can intrepret as what's trend in digiscrap (PL, gold or ombre like nowens said) or life's trend (instagram, the latest music trend, etc) ;)

Sorry I missed this earlier, but yes, I agree with this. Some of these can be treated more as flowers, but in the example you posted, I'd consider it more a badge than a flower.

I don't think a recent outing would really be a "trend" unless it was something that was trendy in your area perhaps. The challenges are definitely open to interpretation, and we aren't looking to disqualify anyone. But for this one, I"d stick with something a little more obviously trendy than just an ordinary outing. (Unless like the other girls said, you wanted to go for something like using ombre or gold or otherwise trendy things in your technique... then you could do whatever topic you wanted).

Every other week this summer, we are offering a free with purchase kit called I <3 ____________. They are only available for one week, so there isn't one currently in the shoppe. The next one will be coming out this Friday night when the new releases go live (6pm EST). I'd say go to the gallery and in the lower right hand corner, under the thumbnails, choose "all" and then on each page, you can just keep clicking "next" until you get to 8. I know there has to be an easier way, but I"m totally drawing a blank right now.

Anyone done with the 'Back to Basics' page? I checked the gallery and most of them used a kit from Studio Basic, is that what it is? TIA

Back to Basics could be anything. It could be getting back to the reason you started scrapbooking (e.g. preserving a story with a good photo, and not stressing about too much embellishing), or it could be about something like a resolution you've made (e.g. eating right, exercising daily, getting enough sleep, etc). It could be about learning something new and feeling like you're starting from scratch again.

Back to Basics has a wide interpretation, and it is really up to you and what the phrase inspires you to think about.

To quote google, BTW means “by the way,” and is used as it is used in normal, everyday speech – that is, it's used to convey an additional thought that may or may not be related to the original thought that was discussed.

Some things I thought of:

Something offhand your kid has said.
Scrap the thoughts in your head at any given time. (That would be a good one - I bet you have a dozen or more things on your mind at once).
Scrap a time you surprised someone. (BTW, we're not actually going to Nana's for the weekend, we're going to Disneyland! ...etc)
Scrap about the acronyms commonly used in your house at the moment.

Libby Pritchett

According to the US Dept of Labor website, this is what Labor Day is:

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

For the prompt, I'd say you could scrap about anything employmentelated (your job, your spouse's job, the job of a sahm, your dream job, your first job, etc) OR you could probably even go literal with "labor" and do a pregnancy/delivery page, too.

I'd say it's up to you to be creative and determine how you want to interpret the prompt. :)

Yes, you do need to do a layout on the free spot if you're not doing a black out. It's only free if you plan to do black out.

I need some clarification - when the space on the bingo cards reads inside/outside; does that mean I can use one or the other (use a photo about inside or a photo about outside) or do I need to include one of each? I think the challenge is open to your interpretation. So, as long as it is along the line the prompt, you can choose to do just the inside or the outside, the same with the naughty or nice. I hope it helps.

Before I take advantage of today's Xmas discount, I just want to double check that we can use retired items for challenges. Thanks in advance for your help! :D

From my understand you can use retired products from CURRENT designers. This is what it says:

The Nitty Gritty

You must use Sweet Shoppe products for the bulk of your page. Outside templates, minor accents, etc. are perfectly ok as long as at a glance the page is obviously created with products from our shoppe and designers!

Challenges MUST remain where they appear on the card. You MAY NOT scrap 9 layouts of your choice and simply put them in the corresponding pattern to earn a discount.

Obviously due to the size of the layouts on the tracker card, it would be difficult for us to check each challenge in detail to make sure it matches with the challenge, but we know we can count on our amazing community to play by the rules.

Unless they change the rules for next year, it is allowed...I'll see if bumping this up will get someone more official to answer.

I found this from Libby, one of the designers, in the FAQ.

All products by current SSD designers are ok. :) Retired products, freebies, items that are for sale through guest spots, etc will all work. As long as the product is by a current SSD designer, you can use it, no matter where you got it.

The bingo card is 1000x1289px.
You know, I usually right click on the bingo card in the thread and save it to my computer. Then I open it in Photoshop (or whatever program you use to scrap) and then when I want to put my pages on it, I resize them to 160x160px and put them on the coordinating squares.
