A month or so ago one of my EHDs crashed - I thought I had most of my stuff copied over to the other one so I wasn't TOO worried. While on the hunt for a layout using Brees templates I realized there is a good chunk of my scrapping stuff missing (what does that say about how much stash I have? :o )

Has anyone had any success recovering from a crashed EHD? Stupid thing wasn't even 3 yrs old! :cursing:

Man, that stinks. Mine is about 6 months old and I try to back up twice a month. I am not sure about data recovery but I've heard it's not cheap. Know any techies that can help you?

Last September I was in the exact same spot as you, except my EHD was only 2 months old. I didn't even look to see if I could recover anything, I just got it replaced. Then afterwards I found out I missed backing up a bunch of stuff before putting them on the EHD so I lost I don't know how much stuff. Sucks, but at least it was just digi stuff that was on the EHD and not pictures or layouts.

I have this site bookmarked just in case it happens again...I've heard it's good.

Yes, I had Best Buy's Geek Squad do a recovery for me. It cost like $200, but it was well worth it because it was all my pics too!

I have a friend who is paying $1400 for some data recovery right now! I hope you don't have to shell out too much to do it! Good luck!

Thankfully all my pictures are fine, and for $200 I can just re-buy any digi-stuff I realize I'm missing huh? That sounds like a lot more fun. And if I don't miss it then I guess I didn't really need it? Actually I think I'll spend the money to buy another EHD so I have another back up again! I *should* at the very least burn all my pictures and completed pages on CDs, but I hate to waste scrapping time doing that! Hmmmm, I may see a mental health day coming up in the very near future! I also think I'm missing some completed pages - I'll have to browse galleries to figure it out. I know for sure I'm missing the ones I didn't in the 2 months between back ups

Man that SUCKS! At least all your pictures are there! I thought I was going to die when I thought I lost all my photos.

I'm debating on if I should buy another EHD and just have that as a back up of my already backed up EHD. UGH!

ETA: So, what brand of EHD did you have? I have a Seagate 500GB one now but want to get a 1TB one and am not sure what brand to get.

I keep flip flopping between burning a mess of DVD's, and getting a 2nd EHD to back up the first. It's 2 years old, so I'm starting to get paranoid about it, lol.

The one that crapped out was a Maxtor. I had it connected to my laptop anytime I was using it. But that was only nights and weekends?

my ehd and my pictures folder backs up to Mozy. I'd die w/o Mozy. LOL

That sucks. How old was it? My friend works in an IT company and her husband (who also works there but is a computer guy, she's the office manager) always recommends the Maxtor One Touch ehd's.

Jordan says mozy/carbonite are rackets just to take your money. Otherwise I'd be doing it. He prefers the DVD route, even though they can corrode over time.

I have my EHD and the laptop HD backup through Mozy also and love it! In fact my initial backup just finished early this morning - it took 2 months and 4 days to backup 210gb of all my stuff! I'd STILL be burning CD's if I attempted to back it all up manually! Not to mention I'd need about a million CD's lol!

Jeff says the same. I figure $4.95 a month for unlimited storage is worth it to me. If I had to physically back stuff up to DVD, it would never get done. Ever. I'm lazy that way. This way, it's done for me and I don't have to worry about it.

Thats what it was. it was only 2ish, maybe 2 1/2? I think we had a power thing that day, I know my son was messing with the breaker for his bathroom the same day - and I had it in the living room instead of in my office where the surge protector is. :cursing:

Surge protectors are key. I never plug anything into the wall anymore. Everything goes on a surge protector. Ya just never know what might happen.

If that's what it was, I'd get another Maxtor. That would've happened to any brand, and I've heard nothing but awesome things about Maxtor, like I said.

Honestly 2 1/2 years sounds pretty good for an EHD. They simply don't stay cool enough to last for too long with regular use. I have several Maxtors and they've all lasted a long time because I only turn them on when I do backups. And power surges are bad news, I had an entire motherboard fried by one, lol.
