I had a Eureka! moment after reading The Five Love Languages and starting to analyze my loved ones' love languages.

I finally figured out that my mom's love language is gifts and that is why Christmas and birthdays are so important to her, why she sends the kids care packages, etc. It is definitely NOT my love language (it is the last of them for me), but figuring out that it was hers made it possible for me to 'translate' her gifts into the words (which is my love language) 'I love you.' I now put extra effort into getting her gifts that I think she will really like because she hears 'I love you' when she is given a gift.
