I am finally getting ready to order my new computer. My sister's IT VP helped me choose, kept me in what I am used to, but upgraded to a bigger and better system for what I need because, but also said I should get a new router since mine is at least 10 years old. I should have asked him what to get at that very moment, but I hesitated to take up more of his time, so I didn't.

So now I get to bug you all. What kind of router should I get? Things you should probably know:

I live in the boondocks, so my internet is provided by Century Link, no cable this far out.

I upload a lot of stuff and the current rate is soooo slow I can't hardly stand it, so I would like to see that improve.

My current route is called Linksys E1200. Not sure if that help with anything, but figured it can't hurt to know, right?

My router is an ASUS and is so much better than whatever the phone company provided years ago (which I had to constantly reboot). I don't like modem/router combos because I just feel they don't work as well, and when one part goes down. . .
Good luck shopping.

Your rate of uploads is controlled by your internet provider and the speed of your connection through them. That is controlled by the modem.

I was having trouble with my router dropping my connection to the computer at times through the wi-fi connection. Now I need the wi-fi for other things and they worked fine. My tech friend suggested actually doing the direct connection with a cord of my router to my computer. Haven't dropped a connection since. I guess what I'm saying is that the router has more to do with the wi-fi connection and if that is spotty then a new router might be needed. I thought I needed a new one... the tech said it is fine and it has been with the direct connection.
